12. dogs are great for protection
as long as they're properly trained. Most people don't know how to properly train their dog and often for even the most basic things.

24. Well there's a difference between compulsive yappers and alert dogs.
I have lived alone in the past, way out in the country, and was relaxed as long as the dog was relaxed. Of course my dogs have always been very much my well informed companions.

38. Purportedly the best way to handle dog barking ...
... is to go to the door, look outside and "check", then say "Good dog".

Barking is a dog's way of passing along to the Alpha Dog, you the owner, that "something is going on outside". You check, see that all is well, so the dog figures, "OK, the boss said it's fine."

I can picture it now: they would see the 105-lb guy coming at them and they would be like "oh shit" and then they would see the 65-lb girl with a mouthful of snarling teeth and they would be like "oh shit" and then meanwhile the 35-lb dog would have ripped them a new hole where their butt used to be.

4. A friend of mine and his wife have a soft-coated Wheaten
terrier. He's a great dog with tons of personality and is big enough to be a proper dog - as opposed to some tiny thing that does nothing but pee, shake and yip (those aren't dogs, they are doglets) - but small enough that he doesn't displace the furniture or requre a wheelbarrow for poop-scooping. He's my favorite dog these days.

5. Sweet, sensitive Setters. They are medium to large, I guess. The ones I grew up with looked like

Mind you, mine were allergic to cat fleas, so they were baldish on the hind end. :(

My grandparents had very handsome Irish setters, but man were they crazy. (The dogs, not the grandparents.)

50. I had an Irish Setter in the 70s
Loved that dog! She couldn't be trained, but I didn't care, just let her off-lead and she stuck with me. One odd thing: she hated water, wouldn't jump in the ocean with me or swim in the lake. But I'd take her to the beach, and just let her run.

Setters are like Pointers and Weimeraners: they bond to 1 person, and this dog was so sweet to me. I was a dramatic teenage girl, so when I was depressed over some guy rejecting me, Cassie would come and comfort me, cajole me into playing with her. It was 40 years ago, but I still miss her to this day.

Almost any dog will sound an alert, but Afghan Hounds are sighthounds bred to be independent hunters. As a group they are my favorites; closely followed by tiny toy breeds.

21. Boston Terrier.
This is my piano-playing BT. The quality isn't very good, but it's my favorite picture of him. One thing I particularly love about him is that he doesn't like his feet to get wet. When that happens, he gets his own towel for me to wipe him, which he loves.

I saw another car hauler the other day with one. He was getting ready to leave the Auto Processing facility at the Port of Brunswick, GA., just as I was starting to load.

I asked "Can I pet him?"

He gave the answer so many Boston owners give;

"Sure. Watch out he don't lick ya to death!"

35. Damn....too many stories.....I need a video camera first!
Before I get a new pup, I'm getting a camera, as one thing I so terribly regret not having, is videos of Mr. BB.

Speaking of "Riding Shotgun, you probably have seen this pic;

I call that "The Elegant Tourist".

He's riding in the passenger seat of one of the trucks I drove, I think it was when I was working for GMC Truck Motorsports, on the NHRA circuit, around the latter part of 1997.

Here he is sitting on the Harley I had when I got him;

That pic was taken at Laguna Seca Raceway, in Monterey, CA at the last race of the 1996 Indy Car Season. He was just over a year old. The registration ladies (I had to see them every race weekend to arrange for parking passes and guest credentials) loved him and made him his own "Annual Hard Card" credential. If you look close, you can see it clipped to his collar. He sat for a photo, the card was made up and laminated! His title was "Team Member"!

He would ride with me on that scoot, laying across my lap with his head to the left. I had rigged a harness that secured him to me, using a full neck harness and another collar I fitted around his waist, then a short lead I slipped through my belt.

Anyway, from early on, regardless if he was in a car, in the truck or on the bike, he would always bark and bite at vehicles going the other way. It got to the point that if he was asleep in the sleeper and I took an exit off the freeway onto a two lane, he would be up, wide awake and want up on my lap with his head out the window so he could get the fuckin' cars! He even learned what a weigh station meant and what they looked like, cause when I slowed down for one of those, he would look up, see it was a scale house and go back to sleep! - No cars to bark at!

But a 2 lane road....well....they were FUN!

He would lean waaaaay out forward when he saw one coming and as it flashed by, he would bark at it and snap at it, as if he might just catch it! It was like he was pissed that they had the temerity to go the other way! I think what got him started on all this was the compression of the air into our vehicle and the accompanying "WHUMP" of sound as a car passes, you know?

After a while, the activity would slowly ramp down to the point he would just sort of...."clomp" at the car with his mouth as it went by. Sort of..."Well, I can't catch you, but if I could, this is what I'd do!"

He did EXACTLY the same thing when he rode on the bike. I had to make sure he was tight to my belt, as I was afraid he would leap off!

So much personality, so much fun to be around, so much of a zest for life and for fun in such a small package.

I think they're all like that, to one degree or another.

Yes. Soon. I will have another soon. I've just now gotten my 2nd paycheck with this new firm so I'll need a month or 2 to catch up all my bills and then another to save for the pup, but soon.

Very soon.

I can't wait!

37. He's sitting as elegantly as a king in both pictures. :)
They all have different personalities, though. I attempted to train my dog as a puppy to scoot on a skateboard & he was spooked by the wheels; kept barking & barking at it until I put it away. There is NO WAY he would have ridden on a Harley! :rofl:

But, like I said, he can play the piano when he wants treats (which is hilarious if I'm on the phone with someone; my mom & sister especially get a kick out of it) & he can catch a nerf football with his two front paws.

It seems like yesterday that I brought him home as a puppy; he was no bigger than my foot. He's 11 years old now & I think a lot about what it would be like without him. I spoil him a lot & want to give him a very happy life.

I'm looking forward to your getting another one. :)
