DU VIBES, please...tonight @ 7 I'm giving a presentation for a $6200 proposal
Out of the $6200, I keep $3680, with the balance going to my programmers (it's a Content Management / eCommerce site).

The client has the option of paying 100% up front and receiving a 5% discount, so if they opt for that, I would pocket $3370 (the discount comes out of my end; my programmers' fee is fixed regardless of the option).

My contact called a few minutes ago to confirm the meeting time and place, and to ask a few last-minute questions. He said "It sounds like you've put quite a bit of effort into being thorough on this."

I told him "I'm confident that this Website will serve you well for many years, and that it will be a long time before you even need to consider tackling a project like this again."

In addition to providing a much more professional experience for visitors to the Website, it flat-out ELIMINATES a major amount of administrative time and effort on my client's side (he loves that part).

So I know that you count the money when you're in line at the bank, not before, BUT...I put a lot of effort into developing something based on my client's needs and wants, and it is looking good. I'm not "over-confident," but I think I'm looking at the odds in a pretty realistic fashion, based on direct feedback I've received so far.

Normally, these kinds of decisions aren't made with me in the room. One of my other clients is on the board...he'll be there tonight...and he's the person who asked me to do this website three-plus years ago, on a pro bono basis. I did, and have maintained it on a pro bono basis ever since. but this latest round of requests was outside of the box and requires some heavy lifting in the programming area. I told them "My programmers won't work pro bono, so I can do this for you, but I have to prepare a price quote."

So I do have three years of tenure with them that is working in my favor.

Just had a "major life-altering event" happen yesterday...one that will be positive in the long run but in the short term is kinda like that thing Tonya Harding's stooge did to Nancy Kerrigan's kneecaps.

Having this happen would get me across the rough waters of the present and into what I am trying to shape into a MUCH better 2012.

No idea what their "accounts payable" process is, so not only do I not know when they'll decide (my other client told me they are serious about doing this NOW and I am going tonight to clarify a slightly different proposal I delivered to them in advance of last month's board meeting), I also don't know how soon after the decision they'll cut a check. I'm hoping days, not weeks or months, but it is what it is and I just have to show up tonight and give it my best short. I can already feel the adrenaline. I have a nice, "plain English" PowerPoint presentation (the overwhelming majority of my clients HATE techno-speak). I'll do my suit and tie thing and other than that it's in the hands of a higher power, ya know?

Thanks in advance...we already KNOW the power of DU Vibes!

:-)

4. I took this photo yesterday...
...my sister complained that I looked too "stern" in the one I uploaded to my Facebook profile, so this is the one I have now.

So other than the fact that I will be wearing a white shirt and probably won't wear the shades during my presentation, this is the guy who's gonna be walking into that conference room tonight.

I'm extremely "comfortable in my own skin" on this one, and I know for a fact that they like what they've heard so far. That makes it even more pressure-free.

Thanks for the vibes!

:-)

14. Thank you...
...I work very hard for my clients, and one of them sits on the board and has been making this known to his fellow board members. That, and the fact that I have been directly been providing pro bono service to this organization for the last three years, means I'm not a stranger to these folks. And I have done my homework on the solution I will be proposing and never have "stage fright" during presentations...in the sales process, it's what I do best.

lets hope they don't find out about India.

15. Unless they have a qualified project manager, India's not an option for them.
If I could just write up a spec and hand it off to my programmers, I could probably charge less for my services.

But programmers learn how to work in black and white terms. You ask for A,B,C, and they give you A,B,C. When you say "But you didn't give me D,E,F,G," they respond "show me where that is in the proposal. You didn't ask for it so we didn't do it."

So short of writing the actual code itself, I have to understand the client's need and my programmers' methodology and come up with a road map...then manage it for the duration of the project...and be in the hot seat, 100% accountable. My clients never meet my programmers.

There aren't a lot of people willing to step up and do that, especially of they don;t have the necessary skills.

23. CLIENT SAID "YES"
There were approximately ten board members in attendance.

My presentation, with Q&A, took about 15 minutes.

They held a unanimous vote, sent for the option to pay everything up front, so it's a $3370 sale for me, with the rest going to my programmers...my biggest single sale in 2011.

See what I said earlier? Those DU vibes WORK. Thanks everyone.

Mike

"You know who" is stepping up the attacks (I'll send details in a PM). I'm thinking of that line from Reservoir Dogs, "You gonna bark all day, little doggie, or are you gonna bite?"

:-)

On with the rest of my life indeed.

My vibes came with the underlying conditional 1% royalty.
That's 1% per vibe.
