1. I will use this OP as an excuse to post a picture of Shirley Jones from another movie.

6. That's Shirley Jones as Lulu Baines.
She won an Oscar for this role in Elmer Gantry.

4. Matthew Broderick or Robert Preston?
I have the latter on video.

Interestingly "School of Rock" is sort of a modern re-make of "The Music Man". With Jack Black as the Music Man, Joan Cusack as Marian, Sara Silverman as the Anvil salesman, and Ned Schneebly as Harold Hill's good friend.

12. I'll be darned. I never thought of that! I like them both, though.
I have a sweet dentist who's Chinese (born here) and is in a barbershop quartet. He recently told me he was going to be in he Music Man and I impressed him mightily by breaking into Lida Rose. I LURVE a good musical, and it's one of the best.

7. If I was forced to choose my favorite musical,
I would be eternally torn between 'The Music Man' and 'Oklahoma'

P.S. The music Man is not on the schedule for my PBS

Which station are you seeing?

13. Does anyone know if the Music Man Blu-Ray is worth it?
While I appreciate the higher-quality sound and picture of the format...the Music Man disc is $44!

14. I recently read the book written by Meredith Willson about the writing..
....of "Music Man." The name of the book is "But He Doesn't Know the Territory!" and it is a hoot. The book is not easily found, but I got it via inter-library loan. Well worth the trouble, definitely.

Now I am waiting for another of his books to arrive, the one he wrote about touring with the John Philip Sousa band. Title: "And there I Stood With My Piccolo In Hand."

RIP Robert Preston, Meredith Willson.
