Bruce Hornsby and the Range - The Way It Is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GlRQjzltaMQ

Standing in line marking time--
Waiting for the welfare dime
'Cause they can't buy a job
The man in the silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old ladies' eyes
Just for fun he says "Get a job"

That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
But don't you believe them

They say hey little boy you can't go
Where the others go
'Cause you don't look like they do
Said hey old man how can you stand
To think that way
Did you really think about it
Before you made the rules
He said, Son

That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
But don't you believe them

Well they passed a law in '64
To give those who ain't got a little more
But it only goes so far
Because the law won't change another's mind
When all it sees at the hiring time
Is the line on the color bar

That's just the way it is
Some things will never change
That's just the way it is
But don't you believe them

1. Thank you, my dear Swede...
I have always loved both the sentiment and the lyrics, as well as the performance, of that song...

Bruce Hornsby seriously rocks!

2. That boy peaked on his first album
Yeah, he did some nice work with the Dead after Brent Mydland's passing, but in terms of songs (with the possible exception of Jacob's Ladder), they can all be found on the first Bruce Hornsby & The Range album.

3. Is it Bruce who plays the piano on that?
That's the best part.

5. The piano is great
on that song and not common in its day.

6. I saw him in concert in Nashville, back in the day.
It was a stoner's delight of an evening. He kicks ass!
