4. Did Steve take them all with him?
Did he go out in a gigantic funeral pyre fueled by MacBooks and iPhones? That would have been awesome.

6. It was a little hard for me...
My laptop keyboard is flat...the keyboard for the desktop slants...But that was years ago and I was old even then. Now I'm fine with my laptop.

11. Do you feel you're going to by moving the computer a lot?
Or using it outside the house frequently?

Otherwise, stick to desktops...Laptops have gotten more reasonable, but the price/performance ratio is still a wide gap. My desktop is twice as powerful as my laptop at 2/3 the price of the laptop.

12. Re the keyboard, I think it depends on your strength as a typist.
I used to teach keyboarding and type 80-90 wpm. For me, it's different going from my keyboard to my laptop, but I get used to it and it takes only a short while to use it as efficiently as I do my PC keyboard.

13. Win7.
It's fine, much better than Vista or ME...on-par for quality to NT or XP. Comes in too many "flavors" for me: Home, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, Decaf, with Cream and Sugar, Grape and of-course Horchata.

I find it's more easier to customize to my needs...it took me 10 seconds to configure My {Docs, Music, Videos, Pictures, etc.} to the external hard drive...it took almost an hour with XP.

14. mine is a little smaller and it doesn't have the dedicated number keys
which I do miss, but otherwise not too bad - plus you can use a usb keyboard if you want - and you will probably want to get a mouse, either wireless or a usb - the touch pad (at least on mine) is kind of aggravating - mouse is much easier for me.

I am getting used to windows 7 - but honestly I think I liked xp better.

I got my laptop about a month ago (my first) it is a warrantied used one from tigerdirect - seemed brand new to me - I am completely satisfied with the computer and their service and recommend it as a great way to get a higher-end machine for the price you would spend for a lesser item new. They had some xp machines too and I was close to ordering one of them but the curiosity about windows 7 tipped me to this one.

15. I've had my laptop for several months now (also have an old communal desktop where I live)...
.
.
.
The flat keyboard is (by now) minimally annoying. The keyboard seems ever-so-SLIGHTLY smaller
and is likewise minimally annoying.
.
That fucking touchpad is STILL a royal pain in my fucking well-touched and well-padded area. The
good news is that it can be turned off. The bad news is that I can still manage to find constant
mysterious ways to accidentally reinstate it.
.
.
.
But the mobility... ah, the MOBILITY!!! It's mainly how I kept in touch with everyone while in
the hospital for so long. And I can keep in touch throughout the day, if I really wish to do so.
.
.
.
I use a mouse... and best of all possible worlds would also have a USB keyboard -- though
that would probably often be MIGHTY awkward in practice.
.
.
.
The difference vis-a-vis destkop/laptop pricing used to be a major roadblock for many folks.
The price of decent laptops has fallen so dramatically, it's almost no factor whatsoever today.
.
.
.
And let's face it... the vast majority of us never approach the storage/response limits on our
computer, be it desktop OR laptop.

18. "Old-fashioned keyboard?"
While I still use a keyboard for my desktop computer (my only computer) I've read that the older IBM-PC keyboards are the ones to find. They're the workhorses of the keyboard world, not giving up the ghost easily or quickly. I'd love to have one, to go along with my 6x8 Wacom tablet. That's graphics tablet, not "tablet" computer :D

I'm one of those handful of people out there that really has zero use for a laptop. The only thing that comes close is my AlphaSmart Dana word-processor and it does use a 'laptop' keyboard. But, I'm not carrying either my primary computer (or even a secondary computer if I had a laptop) around with me that way. If I lose the Dana, I only lose whatever I've written that day, and not two days worth of reloading graphics and maintenance software, not to mention gigs and gigs of lost data ;)

Oh, as I'm sure everyone else has mentioned, Windows 7 is supposed to be quite good. Avoid Vista and the upcoming Windows 8 at all costs!

22. Depends on what you like and what works for you
Edited on Sat Oct-29-11 10:00 PM by quakerboy
If you want to be able to go other places than your desk, a laptop can be handy. I had both, and during college and for a while thereafter. But I had the best laptop I have ever seen, as near to custom made as a broke college student with strangely good access to credit and relatively poor sense could get. I like laptops, but only if you get the exact right one for your needs.

Also, heat is the laptop killer. Which means unless they are treated just right, they tend to die young.

Given abundant money, I would currently rather have a desktop (faster, more durable, better screen acreage) and an Ipad or other tablet to use on the couch or where ever. Which would probably be as cheap or cheaper than buying the right laptop. For me.
