1. Looks like the kid was ready to swing a second time when the cat let him have it.

The kid, not the cat.

I hope the cat wasn't punished.

3. I'd like to give that kid something to cry about!
How awful. I hope the parents punished the child (appropriately, of course). The cat is merely defending himself.

5. I'd let the cat have at him.
Gotta learn about consequences some time.

Somehow I suspect, humans being as fucking stupid as they are, that the cat was punished for defending itself and precious snowflake brat was coddled and soothed.

Edited on Mon Oct-31-11 03:32 PM by seabeyond
cat would not get in trouble, would be hey... lesson learned, who the hell are you to hit a living creature. then to the cat to give some lovins and calm down.

but, to put a kid in that position, especially at that age, is ridiculous and he doesnt get it, yet. that parent should get it, though.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't the way the videographer thought it was going to go when they started filming. Good job of editing!

18. Yeah, cat bites are heinous
Especially cat bites on the face :scared:

I know this because I had a satanic cat who did NOT like being cuddled... but now he's 15 and too old to be evil, so he's pretty awesome now

16. Doesn't ANYONE else see this possibility?
.
.
.
The kid is already crying and APPEARS as though he's
pointing at the kitty.
.
.
.
We're all so quick to rush to judgment here sometimes.
.
.
.
Maybe... M-A-Y-B-E... Kitty is the one who caused him
to cry by doing something physical and whatever "adults"
are in the room are more interested in capturing another
"YouTube moment" than in protecting both child and cat.
.
.
.
Certainly, you don't hit a cat -- but this doesn't look like
someone who can reasonably be expected to apply that
wisdom in the face of anger and fear and pain and the
possibly unconscionable lack of protection and backup
from those he trusts to provide such things.
.
.
.

22. People are ALL too ready to blame the child and nothing is said.
.
.
.
Children of that age (and cats of almost any age) aren't BORN
with an innate understanding of animal/child behavior -- they
DO have natural fight/flight reactions when threatened/injured.
What I see is not simply a petulant child who took his frustration
out on the cat... I see a child crying and POINTING at the cat
before reacting -- looking off-camera and perhaps receiving a
prompting (or no response whatsoever to his plight) from some
adult asshole (or at least an older, more responsible child).
.
.
.
I'm just saying from the evidence... it's almost impossible to say
who "started it", nor who's "at fault" (except almost certainly the
asshole (or assholes) in the room who just sits back and lets it
happen).
.
.
.
Judging from what I can see... it's just as bad to have a kneejerk
reaction to absolve/blame the cat as it is to absolve/blame the child.
.
.
.
Yet the blame seems to have universally and immediately been placed
on the child.
.
.
.
That child almost certainly learned an important lesson (though we
might wish it to have come from the adults in his life)... but I get
as strong feeling of "he got what he deserved" here.
.

23. I did
cat looked angry to begin with and I wondered of there had already been a bap or scratch causing the kid to react

also wondered if cat was possibly declawed, as it went for kid's face and could have resulted in major shredding

as usual you had the integrity to speak up - I already have a bit of a reputation for favoring humans over animals so didn't say anything.

bottom line, nobody knows what happened before or after, and for that matter the person videoing may have been as surprised by it all as the kid was

nobody knows much of anything here, really.

27. True -- but it may be a cat that shouldn't be expected to interact with a child.
.
.
.
I got NoName -- my favorite cat ever -- from a local shelter. The owners left a
fantastic history, including the fact that they gave her up because the cat was
harming the child -- admittedly because the child was rough (but not cruel) with
the cat. The child wasn't yet even into her "terrible two's" and had a hard time
understanding things like "Kitty's tail is NOT a leash!!!"
.
I did find it a little hard to believe as she was the sweetest, overwhelmingly
NON-aggressive cat I had ever known (I accidentally stepped on her stomach once
and as I was jerking my foot back, I looked down to see not even a reflexive
reaction on her part -- but simply a look I interpreted axs "Why?")
.
You can BET I felt like crap for quite a while -- even though it was simply an
accident.
.
.
.

26. Here's another possibility:
The person filming was the babysitter.

While I like the fact that animated gifs allow for pretty much anyone to view a video without needing to go to youtube or have the ultra-most-up-to-date copy of Flash/Java in order to use 'Internet Video Player of the Moment', the main problem with it is that you have no idea of the source for said video. And then we all get into "discussions" like this...

35. Could very well be true.
Still, kitties cannot be reasoned with and the cat's response is a good object lesson in why lashing out is usually counterproductive.
