Just figured out my love of George Sanders "Village of the Damned"
Edited on Mon Oct-31-11 08:02 PM by ceile
Watching "Village of the Damned" right now. In the past 20 years or so I've developed a deep love of George Sanders, English actor. Love him in "Rebecca", "Foreign Correspondent" (yes, I love Hitchcock) and "Picture of Dorian Gray". But I just figured out why whenever I hear him speak I sit crossed legged, lean back and smile. Turns out he was Shere Khan in Disney's "The Jungle Book". I listened to that recording 100 times as a child (my sis had it as an LP w/ a picture book when I was a kid) and I can recite every word. When I was 16 in the early 90s my sis-in-law bought me the VHS tape of "The Jungle Book" for Xmas and I cried. It was the best present ever! I never knew it was his voice in the movie, but now I think I understand why I feel so happy when I hear him speak.
Sorry rambling, but it was almost like a light bulb went off over my head!
The things we associate without realizing from childhood....

1. George Sanders reminds me of "All About Eve"
Eve Harrington: I won't play tonight. I couldn't, not possibly. I couldn't go on.

George Sanders (as Addison DeWitt): Couldn't go on? You'll give the performance of your life.

8. Also from "All about Eve"
George Sanders as De Witt

Marilyn Monroe as Miss Casswell

De Witt: Do you see that man? That's Max Fabian, the producer. Now go and do yourself some good.
Miss Casswell: Why do they always look like unhappy rabbits?
De Witt: Because that's what they are. Now go and make him happy.

2. Geprge Sanders is dead. He committed suicide in 1972.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Sanders

On 23 April 1972, Sanders checked into a hotel in Castelldefels, a coastal town near Barcelona. He was found dead two days later, having taken five bottles of Nembutal.<2> Sanders was 65 years old. He left behind a suicide note, which read:
Dear World, I am leaving because I am bored. I feel I have lived long enough. I am leaving you with your worries in this sweet cesspool. Good luck.

I always loved his dry, deadpan wit in movies. I read his autobiography years ago but forgot alot so I have to read it again. He did have a great voice.
