Men's socks with clocks.
Anybody else remember these?
Naw, I didn't think so.

When I was a young man, men's socks with 'clocks' were the fashion for business and even formal dress.
The 'clock' was a thin design down both sides, from the ankle to the top.

I have no idea why the design was called 'clocks'.
Traditionalists wore them with garters.

I confess to owning and using a pair of them back in the day.
It was incredibly 'cool' back then.
;-)

5. Here is the traditional explanation. The English word clock
comes from French cloche, meaning bell. Clocks were originally bell towers.

The designs on the side of socks were originally shaped like bells.

One of the more rational etymologies, actually.

7. Did you match the color of the socks with the color of your shirt?
I did back in the day. It was sometimes difficult to find purple or pink men's socks but I prevailed. An da chicks wuz diggin' me!

11. Not really.
I think I had black, navy, maroon, and maybe charcoal grey.
Charcoal grey was a hot 'color' for men's suits in the 50s and 60s.
"The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit".

8. I remember them. I even have a box of socks with clocks from my
grandgfather's store which closed in 1961. He had a garage full of stuff he didn't want to sell, mostly clothes.

They're wool socks stored in my mother's cedar hope chest. I've worn a couple of pairs over the years. Had washed them and put them back in the box. I also have a couple of boxes of wool argyle socks.

12. During the late Georgian and Regency periods in England
it was very haute couture for women to wear socks with clocks on them.
