A RUSSIAN historian who allegedly kept 29 female corpses in his home and dressed them up as life-size dolls has been charged with desecrating cemeteries.

The man, named by Russian media as Anatoly Moskvin, is said to have a PhD in Celtic studies and was a specialist on local cemeteries.

Police found the bodies in his three-room flat in Nizhny Novgorod, 400km east of Moscow. Video of the scene showed the mummified remains of women aged between 15 and 25. They were dressed in colourful clothes and headscarfs, their hands, and often their faces, covered in cloth. Several had been posed in chairs.

The arrested man had dressed them using clothes stolen from cemeteries along with the bodies, police said. Dr Moskvin, 45, allegedly inserted music boxes, toy hearts, soap and stockings into the rib cages.
