"Paperback Writer" backed with "Rain" on red vinyl with the jukebox strips!
Bought a lot of 67 records on eBay for $22. Going through them yesterday and there is a very clean copy of "paperback Writer" backed with "Rain" on red vinyl in the original picture sleeve, the Capitol Records building in Hollywood. Plus the jukebox strips are in the sleeve!

Also in the lot were Johnny Cash "Ring of Fire", Hendrix, Stones, other Beatles. Lots of strong A side B side combos like you would find in jukeboxes but these 45s are all in their original sleeves so I don't think they were used that way. Fro example the Hendrix is "Watchtower" backed with "Crosstown Traffic." "Truckin" backed with "Sugar Magnolia"

Too much fun. There are about 6 Gary Lewis and the Playboys records which I have no clue on. Who the heck is that?

1. I trust you've got those little yellow inserts for the 45's.

2. If you like sixties pop, you'll probably like Gary Lewis & the Playboys
I'm in my twenties, but grew up with my dad's copy of their Golden Greats LP and have always enjoyed their stuff.

Gary Lewis was Jerry Lewis's son and (like his dad) didn't have a particularly wonderful singing voice, and much of the time the folks backing him on the recordings were studio musicians and not the original band members-- but the "group" had access to some good songs. I think at one point they held the record for consecutive Top Ten hits, when their first seven singles all made the Top 10.

You may already know some of their songs from oldies stations ("This Diamond Ring," "She's Just My Style") and maybe just not have known the band's name.

3. I recoginze "This Diamond Ring"
thanks for the background. I was thinking it was unfortunate that they had a name so similar to Jerry Lewis, duh.

Reminds me of Soupy Sales sons' story -- forming Tin Machine with David Bowie.

4. What kind of turntable do you use? Mine's a Technics SL-3300 direct drive with the strobe.
Damn nice table.

6. Indeed.
Audio Technica belt drive with USB output. I found a case of vinyl on the sidewalk in NYC about 2 months back. It was like a time capsule -- all 12" stuff from 1979 through about 1987; Tears for Fears, Pet Shop Boys, Prince, Jackson, George Benson, Chic, etc. Brought it home, tired to play it and found that my old turntable seemed to need a pre-amp. Got a pre-amp but that didn't fix the issue so then I got a new turntable...and that re awakened my vinyl passion.

The warm harmonics, the solidness of the sound and the mixes the way they were first released. There is something extra special about 45s. It's like you feel the love that was given to these songs every time the needle drops.

5. Gary Lewis...
...his hit "This Diamond Ring" was arranged by none other than Leon Russell.

Lewis' music career was put on hold when he was drafted into the Army in January 1967 and did a tour of duty in Vietnam that lasted into 1968.

Jerry Lewis went on record as saying that whether he could have pulled some strings to keep Gary out of the Military (especially out of combat), he chose not to.

Gary attempted to return to his music career once he was discharged, but he never rose above "nostalgia act."

From an (unfortunately undated) interview with Gary:

Q - How come you couldn't have gotten out of the Draft?

A - Well, I don't know. I had a really good role model. When I was thinking about getting out of the Draft, I thought of Elvis going into the service at the height of his career and doing what he had to do for his country without complaining. So, thinking of how Elvis did that, I thought to myself, I'm going to do the same thing and I'm going to be proud the rest of my life for it, and I am. It's just amazing how many Vietnam vets come up to me at these shows and thank me for doing what I was supposed to do. So, I wouldn't change that for anything.

7. Rain, one of my fave Beatle tunes
Great Lennon vocal and lyrics, Paul's bass and Ringo's drumming as well.

Not too shabby for a 'B' side!

11. neat photo
there is/was a cover band named "Rain" in southern California back in the late 70s. Love that song and the memories it carries.

9. You got 67 records for $22????
And in good condition? If you were that way inclined, I'd say you'd won a lottery. But it sounds like you treasure the artistic value rather than the monetary value. And good for you!!

And thanks for the info about Gary. He got a bit of airplay in Australia many years ago. But I didn't know about his connection to Jerry.

10. All are in the original jackets and some of the 45s are in better condition than others
There is a very good copy of (Buddy Holly) The Crickets "It's So Easy" in the original Brunswick sleeve.

I bid in the auction and didn't expect to win that low. Was pleasantly surprised by the condition and the sleeves when they showed up. Still playing through them. I think the Paperback Writer disc is worth about $20+ by itself. I'm going to put some of the ones I don't want back on eBay.

There is also a copy of The Beach Boys doing "Good Vibrations" live in London. Not sure if that is rare or not. I had never heard it.

12. There are books that can give you an idea of the monetary value...

... of the individual records -- it sounds like you might have
something worth far more than you are imagining right now.
.
Definitely worth checking out.
