And now we come to the end of the story of Pickles, who went for a final time to the vet today.
Edited on Fri Nov-11-11 10:31 PM by GreenPartyVoter
Renal failure took her away from us at age 17 and a half. Pickles, the sassiest little tame wildcat in the world. I called her "Mini M'Ow." I hope she is now across the rainbow bridge with her brother Pretzel.

She drove hubby nuts with the way she would shred the spines of his record album covers. I caught her doing it once, and I slowly crept up behind her, and slapped the newspaper she was sitting Sphinx-like on. She did a complete back flip! It was like a real life Claude the cat.

She loved to play fetch with a small ball in her youth, and always made this ridiculous "mrooow" sound trying to meow with her mouth full as she brought it back. One time instead of bringing back the ball, she returned dragging a plastic grocery bag by the handle. The ball had somehow gotten into the bag, and when she couldn't get it out she brought everything!

When she was tiny, she was obsessed with watching Nintendo games and figure skating. Sometimes she would sit on top of the old set and bat at the screen while we played games. As an adult she became an "office" cat, who always had to inspect the printer while it was printing.

She hated other kitties. She fought through the window with one. Sometimes he would sneak his paw in under the door of the old farmhouse we were living in, and she would beat it up.

On one of our moves, we thought we'd lost her. Hubby thought it was perfectly reasonable to pack the kitties in the tool box of his truck because weren't going very far at all. But when we arrived, there was only one kitty in the box! I was so upset until I heard her crying. She was a tiny kitty (7lbs on a good day) and had managed to wiggle herself up into the sliding drawer with the wrenches! (She could also slide underneath the trailer doors the same way.)

She did actually escape a few times, but never made it further than a few steps from the house. She was so agitated and angry at the world for being a scary place! LOL She'd go all "Halloween cat" and hiss and spit at absolutely nothing at all!

When she was a kitten she got ear mites, so I had to wrap her up in a towel and give her drops. She was so furious at me for doing this that she promptly jumped up into the beanbag and, glaring at me the entire time, she peed all over it! It wasn't funny at the time, but now it makes me laugh. She was _such_ an alpha cat. (And she had a HUGE voice for such a little kitty. She would get right in my face, wrinkle her nose and, "rowr" at me. Sometimes she would stick her tongue out while doing it.)

Had she been an outside kitty she would have been a tree cat. As a young cat, she loved to climb doors and drape herself across the top of them. (I wish I had a picture of her doing this! It was so funny! Here she is tightrope walking across a curtain rod.)

She was a nurse, and looked after the kids when they were babies, and checked on any family member who was sick. She was also a hairdresser, and loved to groom her people. (I used to call her "Prickles" when she did that.)

She loved to be wherever the family was, especially if we were playing board games or cards. She was always keen to help!

In the last few years, as she became an elderly cat, she began a new nightly habit of sleeping on my pillow (and head and face.) It was actually very soothing, she was soft and warm and a very loud purrer. I am not sure how I will get to sleep tonight without her, my little Princess.

5. Wonderful pictures and an even WONDERFULLER tribute.
.
.
.
Your "moving story" made me laugh. I "lost" a kitty in much
the same way during a move. Boxed her up with the other
cat and she had disappeared somewhere along the way. For
a moment, I even glared at the other cat... like she had done
something horrifying.
.
Turned out she had slipped OUT of the box the MOMENT I
turned my back at our starting point. When I finally drove back (
and climbed up on the roof as I had left my keys inside the
apartment), I found her exactly in the middle of the bare to
the wooden floor living room, patiently waiting for my "return".
.
.
.
I envy you all your time together. You were very, very lucky
to have had each other -- and for so long. The ones who are
"trouble" are often the secretly favorite ones.
.
Soothing vibes to you -- and safe passage vibes to Pickles.
.
.
.

the worst thing about pets is that they die. But most of them leave good memories.

17. She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism a few years ago, and we controlled it with meds as long as we
could, but this time there was no bringing her back. She started losing interest in her food a couple of weeks ago. Instead of chowing down right away it would take her hours of short visits for little nibbles to finish her food. The this week she started rejecting her food altogether. She tried drinking but I don't think she got much into her.

Essentially she'd just wound down, and her time had come. We figured that at 17 years old it might not be worth it to her to push her onward with IVs and all of that. As the vet said, kitties don't think about tomorrows so she wasn't the one mourning the loss of them. That made it a little easier to let her go.

20. Yes, it will keep us busy for quite a while. The kids are already talking about kittens, because
they've never had any baby ones before. I told them we will get some this summer after I've had time to adjust and they are out of school. What's the point of adopting baby critters that grow by the hour if you're going to be in school and missing everything, right? :)

22. Yeah, I think it'll be for the best that way. Plus, we'll need time to kittenproof the house! It's
been ages since we had tiny fluffballs underfoot, and it takes some work making it safe for them.

23. So beautiful
She was lucky to have you and you were lucky to have her. I know it's painful to lose a pet; I've had 8 cats in my lifetime. But I see a happy side to this in that Pickles had a long life and was well-loved and cared for. Many cats are not nearly so lucky to have that kind of caring, loving home. You can comfort yourself that you did everything for her and gave her a good life. I hope you feel better soon.

26. Thank you! I wonder sometimes what happened to the rest of her family. They were all
abandoned by some tenants in our building. I wish I could have kept them all but 6 cats was just more than we could manage at the time. :(

But yes, she and her brother had good long lives. They were spoiled and adored, which they knew, and now they are missed terribly, which I suspect they also know. (I swear Pretzel came back for a few days after he was put to sleep. I am hoping Pickles does the same, just to say goodby like he did.)

not letting it go on too long. I did act faster with Pickles, but in retrospect I wish I had helped her even sooner. (But at the time I was hoping it was just another weight fluctuation from her hyperthyroidism that I could correct with more meds.)

Kitties are so wonderful. Mine is 15, and he's my last surviving childhood pet. He's still in good shape, and I hope he continues that way for many years to come. I'm many miles away from home at grad school now, so I am afraid I won't get to be there when his time comes. I am glad you got to be there for your Pickles.

I spent the last two days of Pickles' life lounging on my bed with her. She had reached the point where patting was uncomfortable, but I think she liked having me nearby and I know it was important for my own sake to be close to her.

94. What a sweety!
This past Saturday I dug a hole. I know my Siberian Husky won't likely last the winter. She's almost fourteen, getting more and more feeble. But not really suffering yet, but I know it won't be long.

There is a quote, some attribute it to Mark Twain, others to Will Rogers. "It is said that dogs don't go to heaven, okay then when I die, I want to go where they go."

I'm sure it will be a place for cats too.

95. Awwww what an adorable sweetie......Grieve.....
It is healing. But grief never gets easy, I am so sorry that you are going through this right now. It's absolutely heart-wrenching. You're not alone....Thank you for sharing stories.

I have to hug Shrimpy, my baby, now. I always have to do that when I read about losing our furry babies. I miss my baby who went to the bridge ~4 years ago.

Before Weenie left, she was extra snugly for about a month. It was something I sensed, an urgency on both our parts to bond during that last month. She was 11 and in fine health; then, ate something that my ex and I did not know was dangerous. It was awful, and she hid her distress so well that I didn't realize how critical things were.

But I take some comfort in the feeling that she knew well ahead of time....she was *beginning* to get a bit old, and maybe, just maybe, she decided to move on so she could trade in for a nice refreshed new life....?

It is good to cry.....
and then love again.....

98. Thank you. Grieving is hard for me. In the past 7 years I have lost both my parents, both my cats
and a neighbor I was close to. I don't deal with change well, so I tend to wander around chanting, "I hate the new normal. I hate the new normal." But eventually I get over it and the new normal feels, well, normal.

I'm so sorry for what happened to Weenie. :( It's so hard to protect them because we can't always know what to protect them from.

Keep hugging Shrimpy for me. :) I used to do the same thing whenever I read DU pet obituaries. They always sent me running for a kitteh or two.

119. that's a LOT of loss, GPV! And grief is rotten for *everyone*!
I don't know of anyone who handles it easily. I guess some sublimate it or repress it better than others....... Ha, my little whiney mantra is "grief sucks, grief sucks"

thanks for your compassion for Weenie--I didn't mean to derail your focus, just well....we've all been through grief. You say it well when you say we can't always *know* what to protect them from.

112. They really were. It's hard to believe anyone could just abandon them, but
that's how we ended up with them. Neighbors in the apartment building we lived in up and moved and left both parents and four nursing kittens behind. We were only able to take two of them. I still wonder how the rest of them fared after going to the shelter. :(
