OK, I'll be Andy Rooney: Potato chip bags
Potato chips used to come in a cellophane (or something) bag.
It was pretty much full of potato chips.
You could buy 'gourmet' chips in a big tin tub.
The were called 'Charles Chips, not that that matters.
The lid made a satisfying 'click' when you put it on the can.
They were great for storing all manner of stuff when the chips were gone.
I like things you can put things in.

Now you buy an inflated Mylar bag of potato chips.
You could use the bag for a camp pillow, if you liked to camp out.
I don't.

When you open it, there's half a bag of potato chips.
The rest is air...or nitrogen...or helium, for all I know.
Whatever they inflate those bags with.

I wonder who came up with the potato chip bag inflator?
I bet the guy's a millionaire now.

1. I grew up with Charles Chips
they were fantastic.

Have you noticed that in a matter of only a few years the regular size bag of chips has gone from 6 oz to 3.5 oz. The larger bags cost 2 to 3 times more.

5. Thank you. I'm channeling.
Andy would have hated 'channeling'.
So do I.
But somebody's gotta do it, right?

3. Not bad at all.
I totally got the Andy vibe while reading it.

I can see him doing one about being deceased....

"You know, dying's not really all that it's cracked up to be... I mean, you just kind of lay there with nothing to do. I like the quiet though. I've always like the quiet times."

"It's kind of like taking a nap, but it lasts a lot longer. I like naps. I always have. But I'm not sure I'm going to like a really long nap. I guess I can get used to it though."

"It's nice looking down and seeing all the people saying nice stuff about me. I'm really flattered. I don't know if I deserve it. But it's really nice."

"I really like trof's piece. That's something I would say. I don't know what trof even means, but I'm sure it's something profound and meaningful."

"I'm getting tired now. Maybe it's time to continue my nap."

4. I was wondering about that the other day (having made a sodium splurge)...
.
.
.
... to buy a bag of Ruffles Tapatio Hot Sauce & Lime potato chips
on sale.
.
.
.
I wondered if a greater ratio of bag air pillow volume to chips helps
minimize breakage.

7. Yes.
That's why there is so much air in the bags. It keeps the bags of chips from crushing each other in the box. At least that's what they were saying on some program I saw that was showing how they make Cape Cod kettle chips.

9. Grew up with Dentler's, they came in wax paper with a window, Lay bought 'em out.
It took a kid half my age as a teenager to show me how to open up the new plastic bags, 'cause, duh, they wouldn't tear...

Now I see they're mostly ground up potatoes, and the flavored ones even have MSG in them!

:puke:

I mean that, they make me puke. It ain't food anymore, folks!

Still get to jonesing for some potato chips sometimes...

Regular Wavy Lay's will do.

11. As a kid I loved Dickey's potato chips, which were made in New Orleans.
They were light & crispy & cooked in honest-to-goodness oil -- not the trans-fat kind -- & the flavor was unbeatable.

But the cellophane bag with the amber tinted see-through window made them look even more appetizing.

Lay's, which doesn't have the full flavor that Dickey's had, ran the smaller Dickey's out of business.

12. Sounds a lot like Dentler's over in Houston. Hi, Fellow Swamp Thing!

Other thing I remember from that era were NEHI sodas. Traveled in a pullman car with family going through NOLA to Georgia years ago and got those at the train station. They had chocolate, LOL!

13. So you're from down south, too! Nehi's were great. Years ago I found a website
that had a lot of interesting nostalgic items like Nehi's & Frostie root beers & I ordered a case of an assortment for my husband for Father's Day.

15. I remember the Charles Chip delivery van arriving at our house in TN with delicous chips!
This was in the very early 1970s. The cans were fabulous for storage. My dad kept all sorts of nuts and bolts and things in them in his shop. We only buy chips every once in a while these days. They're too expensive, fatty and salty. We eat lots of pretzels and air popped popcorn instead.

Have you tried Zapps potato chips from LA? They are awesome! I discovered these tasty cajun chips at a local cajun eatery owned by NOLA natives.

19. Detroit's New Era Potato Chips came in a cool tin can

Until the company was gobbled up by a larger potato chip company, then the plant was closed.

:hi:
