1. asshole
that isn't any joke

Thursday afternoon I downloaded open office (115 MB) in about 10 minutes. While I was watching the sale.

damn. that would have took all night and probably at LEAST 3 tries due to disconnections up here.

also found out a new fiberoptic line is getting strung on one of the powerlines about a mile and a half below the house. that cheers me so.:eyes:

4. Gah! You have no idea how awful it is being rural!!!
Your words are like throwing salt into the wounds you bastard!!!

We SUFFER!!!!!!

(of course I don't anymore, MY bum-fuck nowheresville area now can receive a Verizon wi-fi unit!)

But I feel Kali's PAIN!!!! 25 damn years without anything but dial-up... shit I thought I'd go mad. I think we have to get together a DU fundraiser for Kali to bring wi-fi to the remote areas of the US - like hers.

5. oh I could do the verizon thing
I'm just too cheap:rofl:

but it isn't going to take very many times of playing on a faster connection to change that!

8. I'm 9 months into being "dial-up" free, and I'll never go back!!!
I downloaded the latest version of Quickbooks in minutes!!! (vs days, yes all you skeptics, DAYS!!!!!!) I remember times when I would put a download of Adobe on at 9 pm and it was still working its way through 24 hours later....

I really sympathize. It's been an epiphany for me. You may not think the money is worth it now but trust me, it's SOOOOO worth it. I hated it when my computer would crash just because I tried to download WillParkinson's house pics!

you are worth it!! Get a Verizon wifi unit now!!!

7. I actually DID feel that pain up 'til about 6 years ago or so.
.
.
.
Lived in a nice RV park with a SPECTACULAR view about 20-25 miles north
of Tucson (about a mile of nothing but desert between me and Picacho Peak).
.
Nothin' but dial-up, until I could FINALLY get a Verizon hook-up at about
$70/mo. In far less than a year, the RV park I was living in put in free wi-fi,
so I bought my way out of my Verizon contract -- flat $175 fee... NOW they
have a graduated fee system that drops about $5-10/mo for every month you
have it. It was a no-brainer -- $175 lump sum or $70/mo for about 15 months
or so.
.
.
.
Couldn't listen to music/stream radio/watch videos.
.
.
.
Even SMALL downloads FELT like they took the 39 years alluded to in that pic.
.
.
.
.
.
I don't really find anything amusing about poor Kali's predicament.
.
.
.
.
.
I have (pfft) quite a bit of (hnnch) empathy and sympathy for her (hrrrnnnkkk)...
.
.
.
OH, SWEET JEBUS I THINK I'VE HURT MYSELF!!!!!

9. Back in the days of dial up local BBS's
I had this ZOOM or Magic modem. It was real pretty in it's smoky clear plastic casing and led lights.

As it got older though it slowed down (we are talking 300 baud or whatever it was called back then)
I figured out it was getting too hot and so my friends and I found a way to make it go faster so that we could download dirty gifs.
We got a bag of ice and took the case off the modem.
Then placed the bag right on the circuit board!!

We did have to pick it up every minute or so to wipe off the condensation (at least we were smart enough to know that), but it worked like a charm. With that method we were rocking at 4800 to 9600 Baud!
