Years ago, I used to catsit 2-3x/yr for good friends when they went on vacation. |

. . . Cool cats. Cool condo. Great gig. . . . They wanted to pay me for my "troubles". I declined... saying, "This is just what friends DO." . . . One of the smartest moves I ever "made". To thank me, they would take me out for a very nice meal somewhere in Tucson -- and they were serious foodies... so they KNEW "nice" meals (he was a captain at the finest restaurant in town -- Janos -- and had been in the business for about 20+ years). . . . We went to Janos once. Truly, TRULY sublime. With dessert, we got a muscat dessert wine. I had always thought muscat wine to be in the company of muscatel, which I associated with cheap CHEAP rotgut fortified wines favored by down-and-out alcoholics. And I've always associated "dessert wines" with cheap sickeningly sweet Mogen-David wines. . The finest meal I probably ever had in my life (and I've had some very fine meals) -- and this little glass of wine may have been the highest point of the meal. . My goodness!!! . It was lightly sparkling. I can't find in my research the answer to THIS question -- are ALL muscats sparkling (there are several muscat wines flanking the champagne/sparkling wine display at my grocery store, but none of them mention "sparkling" on the labels). One thing I found is that muscats from Italy are sometimes(?), often(?), always(?) sparkling but the info SEEMS to infer that they are identified as muscat ASTI on their labels. . . . Oenophiles, please? What's the scoop on muscat wines? . . .

had a few when I went to Germany and M took me around and down to Alsace. Loved some of them. I was like you - thought they were bum wines. And because you were making fun of me I will now brag about what is sitting in my refrigerator - 3 bottles of hand-carried local Rieslings from the Rheingau. nya nya nya
oh - and a bottle of Palinka from Hungary via the Hungarians we traveled with in 2009.:9
