Poll question: Thanksgiving side dishes.
I am NOT including mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, bread, or fried road kill because they are all obvious common side dishes for thanksgiving.

2. Curried Sweet Potato Salad
It's been one of my Thanksgiving traditions for several years since I first had it at a little, out-of-the-way restaurant in north Georgia when a friend & I were up there camping / hiking. We loved it so much that she called the restaurant and begged them for the recipe, and they gave it to her.

Other sides will be homemade yeast rolls, mashed potatoes (with my turkey / orange gravy), fresh cranberry sauce, green bean cassarole, and my mushroom pecan stuffing.

Nom, nom, nom!

31. Curried Sweet Potato Salad
4 C cubed sweet potoatoes, cooked (I boil them till they're just fork tender & then drain & rinse them in cold water -- they seem to hold together better when done this way, otherwise you wind up with mashed sweet potato salad)
1/2 C mayonnaise
2 tsp curry powder
1 tbl brown sugar
1 tsp ground mustard
1/2 C dried cranberries
1/2 C pecan pieces
2 green onions, sliced
Salt and pepper to taste

Mix mayo, curry, brown sugar & mustard. Toss in potatoes, cranberries, pecans & onions. Salt & pepper to taste (I add salt to the water that I cook the potatoes in, and then don't add anymore, leaving it to each person to salt it to their own taste).

Chill at least overnight before serving -- it's actually better to make it 24 hours in advance so the dried cranberries have a chance to reconstitute a bit.

Mashed with butter, and a little salt and pepper. Yummy! I won't go out of my way for white turnips, however. Meh.

10. Corn Pudding with Bourbon
Corn Pudding

Corn pudding turns up at most of B.'s family holiday meals. Her mother used a combination of canned whole-kernel corn and cream style corn. B. likes to use the corn right off the cob if its in season. And you can add a spike of bourbon to taste.

2 large eggs
3/4 C evaporated milk or heavy cream
2 C canned cream-style corn
2 C corn kernels, canned (drained), frozen (thawed), or fresh
2 T unsalted butter, melted
2 T dark brown sugar
2 T cornstarch mixed with 2 T water
1/2 t. ground nutmeg
3 T bourbon (optional)
1/4 t. salt
1/4 t. ground white pepper

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 1-quart baking dish.

Beat the eggs and cream together in a large bowl. Stir in all the ingredients and pour the mixture into the baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes or until slightly browned and a fork inserted in the center comes out clean. Serve immediately. (serves 6)

This is the same recipe I use.

but if that was at my Thanksgiving table, I'd ask for the bourbon to be served on the side.

28. They're best when you pick them out of the garden very shortly before steaming (or other cooking)
They grow like weeds, but you can dense-plant them and they produce a SHITLOAD of food in one season.

Although I shouldn't really try it. I am death to plants I want. Plants I don't want seem to thrive magnificently though.

22. buttered peas with pearl onions
and the requisite relish tray of black and green olives, sweet and baby dill pickles

some years I like to do mixed wild rice too as I don't like stuffing, not sure this year. budget's tight and as I do every year lately I'm debating getting a "dinner to go" from the store so I don't have to do anything. Of course I know that isn't going to be how I handle it so might as well cook it all like always...:eyes:

My favorite is always the carrots that are cut into thin strips and tossed in a sweet, tangy glaze made with butter, brown sugar and ginger. Yum.
