Poll question: What will you NOT be having for Thanksgiving?
Edited on Mon Nov-14-11 10:33 AM by HopeHoops
There has to be SOMETHING on the "no" list.

On Edit: Mine? Waldorf salad with multi-colored mini marshmallows in it or sweet potato casserole with melted marshmallows on top - those both make me gag.

1. Yams or sweet potatoes - yuck.
No sweet food.

My mother used to make those Waldorf salads, and I miss her, but not her salads.

2. I think the idea came from one of the "Women's Day" type magazines in the early 60's.
I'm pretty sure that's where the glazed spam with the whole cloves, pineapple ring, and cherry came from as well.

:puke:

36. Somewhat, but the right seasoning and dipping sauce can tip them towards savory.
With the frozen kind, the Alexia brand chipotle sweet potato fries are quite good (I like them with a spicy mayo dip). Honestly though, plain sweet potato fries aren't too cloying and ketchup or ranch dressing pairs well for dipping (the latter for me, I don't really like ketchup all that much).

43.  If you slice them and pan fry them the sugars caramelize and they
have a sweet taste. I like to add some finely chopped onion to the mix.

No one in my 20 person guest list (ages 1.5 to 66) will touch that crap, but many will eat a baked sweet potato.

:puke:

They also make the BEST potato chips.

27. I love 'em just plain, slow baked to bring out the sweet, sliced with butter.
Some people do make a pie much like pumpkin pie out ot them. I don't like those, but I think it's a matter of what grows well for the cook to use.

I'm not talking about sweet potatoes with marshmallows and crap on 'em, just regular sweet potatoes with butter. Still too sweet.

I like my side dishes savory.

25. Interesting.
Try mashing them with a carrot, coriander, cumin, bit of ginger, some sauteed onion...ah shit what else was in there, if I remember I'll update this. It was a filling I had in Soul-food/Indian fusion samosa at some trendy restaurant. It was great...but I love sweet taters and samosas so  it might not be any better to you.

I used to have to do the yams and marshmallows thing because my daughter demanded it, but when she grew up...I tried a wonderful recipe that mashes them with a Thai Red Curry.
Really really good. I'll try to post the recipe before Thanksgiving.

Turmeric and Garlic. I'm not sure how much the turmeric does as it's mostly a dye.

37. I make mine semi-sweet/savory/spicy
I boil-and mash the hell out of 'em (skins on), and I add molasses -- you'd think sweeter, right? Not necessarily; the molasses adds a certain smokiness.

Then I basically simmer-and-stir the mix for about an hour in sauteed onions, garlic, ginger, and jalapeños. I season liberally with cumin, curry, oregano, rosemary, Worcestershire sauce, a little cayenne, a little paprika.

It comes out with a really almost meaty-sweet flavor that I love, and I have no sweet tooth to speak of. (I feel like a failure as a woman sometimes, because I would choose bacon over chocolate ANY DAY.)

54. Okay, you and Chan have inspired me to experiment with sweet potatoes.
I did have a taste of phenomenal sweet potato soup recently at a restaurant (my husband had ordered it). It was so good we asked what was in it so we could try to recreate it. They brought out the list of ingredients and I photographed it with my phone:

Onion
Celery
Carrot
Garlic
Sweet potato
Sage
Thyme
Oregano
Chili flakes
Veg. base
Corn starch
Cream
Nutmeg

I don't know the proportions or the process, but I can wing it, I think.

55. the make good fries or chips
salt, pepper and just a hint of garlic powder - yum - I'm like you don't want sweet side dishes

of course frying sort of negates some of the health bennies, but hey it is a way to start maybe I will be able to eat them baked eventually:rofl:

our motto around here is a corollary to Bart Simpsons "green is trouble, fried get double" and that is you could deep fry dog poop and it would probably be good

45. It's still meat as far as we're concerned. Besides, I wouldn't trust seafood now even if I wanted.
That's especially true for scavengers. The last crabs I had were, well, probably 22 years ago. About every other one was nasty - ammonia, photographic chemical smells, weird color, metallic debris. It was pretty gross.

19. I like tofu
I like the cubes of it in miso soup and I like it fried like the place by my house does (spicy!) but I wouldn't want to replace delicious, hormone-pumped turkey with it.

Chan may have allllll my sweet potatoes in whatever form he wishes.

Also, I only eat the white meat.

I am still trying to find a stuffing I don't like. I'm trying real hard. I don't believe it exists but I'm trying them all as I find them to make sure.

I won't be eating any cranberry anything either but I like the color of it so I want it on the table.

I saw Giada DeLaurentis make a pumpkin risotto on TV last week and I think I might look into trying to make that. It looked fantastic and that has virtually nothing to do with how much I love everything about Giada.

I make one batch to stuff the pumpkin (or whatever squash we're having) and another to bake. It comes out like brownies you can cut into blocks and is great with mushroom gravy.

41. fucking chestnuts
One year I was making a huge spread of yummy recipes from Gourmet and Bon Appetit magazines - Herb Roasted Turkey, stuffing, sweet potato and green apple baked casserole, little hors d'oeuvres, chocolate velvet cheesecake... I was going all out.

Two of the recipes called for chestnuts - first of all, those suckers were impossible to find in Des Moines, IA 15 yrs ago. My husband drove all over and hit at least 6 grocery stores to find them. Secondly - those fuckers are impossible to cook and finally they did jack shit to add to any flavor.

If I even hint at using chestnuts in a recipe my husband gives me a death look.
