13. That was someplace I wanted to go last time we visited.
Unfortunately the lure of warm oceans is too great for us. Here in Northern California the ocean is always cold!

21. That and the Saddle Road between Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea...
...are kind of off the beaten path. Many rental car companies won't even let you go up there.

Can't beat the tropics.

7. Out of Oahu, Maui and Kauai, it's Kauai.
:loveya: It's lush, it's green, it's everything a tropical paradise should be.

I've never been to the Big Island. I think I'd like the lusher, older Hilo side better than the sunny, golf-y Kona side, from what I can tell. I've heard a lot of the Big Island is volcanic moonscape, which is interesting, but not my favorite scenery on an island. However, I'd LOVE to see the volcano and lava pour into the sea.

19. Yup.
Those are the only 3 islands I had the good fortune to visit. I liked Kauai the best, by far. The best thing about it was that it wasn't as crowded and touristy as the other two. I have to say, however, my most favorite spot of the three was Haleakala National Park.

I want to visit the Big Island, too. Not just for the volcano, but also for the black sand beaches.

8. I liked Oahu for Diamond Head and Pearl Harbor.
Kauai had the best shave ice and the best waves for jumping.

Me at Pearl Harbor:

9. Diamond Head is pretty awesome.

Battery Harlow

This is where the soldiers at the top used to have their quarters.

I worked at Diamond Head for 10 months.

The punishing touches are being put to a summit loop trail so that you go up the stairs and come down the other way.:)

They've been planning to open so much more it for a couple decades - the National Guard and Civil Defense just do not want to leave or co-operate w/State Parks.

11. Only been to one
Oahu, of course, the destination for most tourists. I would love to see the others, though, but probably not gonna happen again in this lifetime.

They're all beautiful, though.

12. Only been to Oahu.
It was fascinating to see the still battle damaged walls of some of the buildings at Hickam AFB.

16. second pic is way cool
I've only been to Oahu and while it was certainly gorgeous, I have to say as a visitor to the two "non-48" the people in Alaska were way more fun and friendlier.

Comes with tourist destinations, I know, but at age 15-16 I was really needing human contact more than pretty scenery and that was the very strong impression of those two places.

18. You should've gotten away from Waikiki
or better still, off O'ahu. As a general rule, the farther you get from the H-1, H-2 or H-3 freeways, the more likely you are to find people who "live aloha".

20. we were there for over a month
(my father was doing some work at the University) so we were all over the island and to be fair we were in Anchorage for almost 6 months, but I think if I were a local on Oahu I would probably not be all that interested in new people either - tourists coming through for two weeks at a time are rarely the kinds of people you tend to make long term friends with.

I imagine that holds true anyplace that has a large tourist economy. (and one of the reasons I get so frustrated with some of the local environmentalist types around here that think tourism is the only economy we seem to need and want to get rid of ANY resource-based businesses including agriculture. Tourism only pays when times are good, and no offense to the birders out there but you guys really aren't big spenders, so the locals aren't making a living selling gas and snacks to ya'll. And while Tombstone brings in the Germans and Japanese we don't all want to dress up and get our pix taken either.)

22. There definitely can be a real chip on the shoulder for some people...
...Hawaii is only removed from colonialism by a few generations. There can be some very strong feelings about it and the role that tourism has played. We're only about 30 years away from fake hula being predominant in Waikiki entertainment.

But most Hawaiians would admit there are haoles and then fuckin' haoles who care nothing for the land or the people.
