What toys did you make yourself as a kid? We used to take boxes and make floor plans out of them and... |
|
decorate the walls (inside sides of the boxes) and the floors with cut out couches, mats, paintings, appliances from decor magazines. I love floor plans to this day. In fact that is my favourite part of the Sunday New York Times. Was like making and decorating a doll house on the cheap.

4. We lived less than a mile from the tallest man-made waterfalls in the U.S. (at the time)... |
|
. . . ... The Cascades -- and there was an official Soap Box Derby track that ran down the back of that hill. . We would make REALLY primitive "cars" out of scrap lumber (the wheels were usually "borrowed" from our little brothers' and sisters' tricycles -- all of us being punished for those alleged "borrowings" at one point or another). . It's a wonder none of us were killed on those runs. . What stands out in my memory was a HUGE (and monstrously HEAVY) two-kid car made out of 2x4's and orange crates. . The rear rider controlled the 2x4-and-rope steering system from his seat in the back... and the brakeman knelt up front and pulled up HARD on the iron rod to drag against the asphalt track (or dirt road at the base) and, ahem... "stop" the car. . On our maiden voyage, one of the front wheels fell off and we careened OFF the track, slamming into an oak tree. I flew off without injury, but Ricky flew off the front and was knocked OUT by said oak tree. . We were one bunch of frightened little boys until he woke up. . Figured out a better way to secure the wheels and Ricky and I made a successful second run the following week. That monstrosity took FOREVER to pick up speed, but was SCREAMING by the time we reached the bottom of the hill (a LONG flat braking dirt road at that bottom). . . . Very cool, iconic smalltown fun. We were heavily influenced by Spanky & Our Gang (the movie shorts, not the band) and The Little Rascals. . . .

clueless enough to go down a hill in it though. LOL!

10. I built a kick ass fort once |
|
out of lumber that I scavenged. Then I camouflaged it with handfuls of grass pulled from all over. A week later, the grass was quite dead and brown. And I had acquired some illicit fireworks. Had to set them off inside, or someone might see it from the house, ya know.
Some instants later, after lighting fireworks in a well enclosed space in which I was also contained, surviving the excitement, I noticed smoke. And fire. Apparently dry grass makes great tinder.

7. I remember making those little rooms out of shoe boxes. |
|
We made forts in the living room out of blankets and overturned chairs.
My brother made himself a pair of cardboard wings and jumped off a wall along our back yard.
He did not fly. Fortunately the wall was only about 4' high.

9. we made puppets out of socks |
|
added buttons for eyes and yarn for hair, and whatever odds and ends my mother was willing to give up from her sewing box for decorations (bows, ties, etc.).
We also used a sheet and a lamp to make the shadow figures with your hands.
Outside we built snow forts that were really big and elaborate.

11. Formed styrofoam packaging |
|
Back in the old days when they were half the size of the box, rather than today's minimal pieces in the corners of packages.
Those can make great castles, forts, landscapes, etc for GI Joes, or Legos. And a little spray paint could melt parts down to create a new one when the original gets boring.
Then I took it to the next level. You can make almost anything for your action figures by use of some Yarn and plastic canvas. Starting with really comfortable lounge chairs, all the way up to landscapes and anything else. Not quite as cool as the premade vehicles and things that wealthy families could afford, but as long as you have a rich imagination and don't mind playing by yourself, no problem

16. A Batman grappling hook-like folding bat thingie. |
|
My dad had this weird liquid rubber shit that was, well, (what's the laxative liquid called?) a disgusting light pink color but it dried red. I used rather thin balsa wood, made a folding bat hook, and coated it in that rubber stuff and then used a long strand of yarn to make the climbing cable. Needless to say (but I'm going to anyway) my efforts to climb a tree with that device were comical at best (pun not intended).

|
and then made clothes to fit them. Anyone remember when the Sunday comics had a section for cut-out dolls? I started by making my own clothes for them. Unlimited possibilities.

We'd use whatever we could find to make them, and built them taller and taller as we got better using them. It was so much fun.
