PASSOVER: How it all went... |
|
Hey all. Some of you may remember my post from Sunday night. Basically, my Jewish girlfriend was taking me to my first Passover (I am not Jewish, btw :) ) at her parents house. To be honest, I knew very little about the Passover celebration on the 1st night. I was in-the-dark about the whole thing and my girlfriend didn't really clear it up at all. I want to thank those who responded; you guys helped shine some light on the event.
I ended up having a lot of fun. There were about 27 Jewish people and the one goy (me). Everyone wanted to meet me, being the boyfriend and all. I thought my Italian family was loud at get togethers. Her Jewish family can sure yell with the best of them. Great bunch of people, it is just they are loud as hell. But in a good way.
Most memorable part was when I was reading a paragraph from the haggadah. It was going well when all of a sudden, my girlfriend's mother's (who was leaning forward in her chair reading along) copy of the haggadah catches on fire from the sadr candles on the table. Boy, that sucker ignited like a match. She threw down the flaming booklet and jumped up. Luckily, the water was near and nothing was destroyed but it was quite a sight, nonetheless.
I had a lot of fun and learned. The food was ok except for the gefilte fish. I don't know how anyone can stand that stuff. I have never had some much Matzah in my life :) . I hope everyone else who is celebrating Passover had a good first and second night.

1. Yes, Jewish families are loud. |
|
It's not surprising that there are many Italian/Jewish couples. Volume and Melodrama in both sects.

2. I am glad you enjoyed your first Seder, neo... |
|
But I MUST disagree with you on gefilte fish.....I LOVE it! One of my friends serves it from a loaf that she buys from the kosher butcher. It tastes much better than the stuff out of the jar. I think it comes in a loaf like ground turkey and it is cooked. She slices and serves it....
27 people at a Seder is a lot of people. We Jews can be a boisterous bunch that is for sure.
YUM YUM!!!!

I suspect gefilte fish is an acquired taste...kind of like lox. I've actually made it from scratch.

and boy was it not tasty. I've loved fish all my life and I think that was the worst fish I have ever tasted. But I'm glad someone likes it.

3. Well, at our little rural church in Mississippi, we celebrated Passover |
|
last night. There were about 25 of us; we got the Haggadah? off the net and did the best we could. Couldn't hang in there with the Hebrew phrases, but it was interesting. Last year, our one Jewish person in town came, but this year she went to Nashville to celebrate it, so we were left to our own devices. Wine was good too.
Anyway, it was pretty neat.

And you kept the yamulka off your butt, right?
I'm also glad that we were helpful in preparing you for it.
Did you drink a lot of wine? Did you find the seder meaningful?

8. Yarmulke off your butt? Excuse me, what does that mean? |
|
Sorry, but as a Jewish person, that's offensive to me, and I can joke with the best of them.

9. I'm glad you asked instead of just slamming me |
|
Seems offended DUers are more prone to just be offended without bothering to find out the truth, so I applaud you for asking.
It was inside joke from the thread he posted the other night, no offense given or taken then, just a funny moment. Sheesh.
If you want to see the joke, search for his Sunday night thread and you'll see it. It was a silly moment from a funnily worded sentence he wrote.

as I said on Sunday, it was a figure of speech (replace myself with my butt, or my arse, or whatever). it may have not have been clear so I apologized and changed the post.
Sheesh is right :)

14. Nah, it wasn't anything you needed to apologize for |
|
I knew, even reading the first time, you meant it only as a figure of speech.
It was just funny. :-)
