Sympathy needed: Dentist tomorrow -- filling and a crown.
Edited on Wed Apr-07-04 10:43 PM by Catshrink
The last time I whined here about the dentist, it had been the first time in five years I'd gone. I need a filling in one tooth and a crown in its neighbor. I kind of knew that and it's being done tomorrow. Later on, I'll get another crown replaced.

I'm nervous. I'm confident in the dentist -- he seemed quite competent and understood my phobia. Still.... I hate pain, I hate needles, I don't want to do this. Whaaaaaaaaa!

1. Shouldn't be too bad
Nice thing about the crown replacement is that the dentist doesn't have to get into any nerve areas at all; unless there's a lot fo decay or something, then he might, but if there was that much he'd likely just do a root canal. I had a crown put in a couple years ago because I chipped a big chunk out of a molar and I was surprised when the dentist went in to remove the crown and then said "Okay, all done". I don't like drilling in my mouth at all, but I had to say, "But what about the pain part? You didn't do the pain part?" And he said, "Nope, that's it for drilling."

I could scarcely believe it.

I hope for the best for you - I know how traumatic thinking of going to the dentist can be. I sympathize with you!

2. Thanks, Rabrrrrrr
I just hope the dentist isn't a "miserable failure" like Jr! Just wish they could knock me out for the whole thing.

3. I scoff at your crown and filling and raise you an impacted root canal,
3 root canals with crowns and two cracked molars from clenching my jaw while I sleep!

:) :) - I hope you get nitrous - thats the only way I have survived!

7. He doesn't use nitrous!
then I wouldn't be so nervous. Ouch! You have had some work done. I've had one root canal and have about 4 crowns already. My fillings were so old and the tooth decayed under the fillings that they needed the crowns.

The dentist who did the root canal was absolutely gorgeous and sang oldies songs while he worked. Sigh.... he made it bearable.

I'll get through....

19. It should be illegal to practice dentistry without Nitrous!!!
That has been my saving grace thru years of work....I get so buzzed he could cut off my toes and sew them across my forehead and I wouldn't care.

4. Don't sweat it, the only pain
you'll have is paying the bill, unless you're fortunate enough to have insurance!

8. Great insurance -- to a point.
They pay 80%, but only $1000 a year. This will be it for now. The other two crowns can wait until next school year when my insurance starts up again.

5. Cool! A "Coronation"
You're gonna be ROYALTY! With a NEW CROWN!

Uh, best I can do. I don't have many dentist jokes...
Except the one where they patient reaches out and grabs the doctor's goodies and says "Uh, Doctor, we're NOT gonna hurt each other, ARE we?"

9. When my nephews were little I had them going...
I told them I was going to be a queen. When I finally told them it was only a crown on my tooth, they said, "Auntie Bill, it's not the same thing," in a little disgusted 'gee you're dumb' voice.

10. Thank God for that!
I've had two of them out, separately, and it was pretty painless. One of my students had all 4 out at one time -- and was in class the next day for a test. Unbelievable! Glad I don't need to do that.

12. I wish!
My dentist in Seattle gave me nitrous and let me bring my own CD for the huge set of headphones he let his patients wear. I remember listening to either Dire Straits and the Stones. That drowned out all the drilling!

13. You can do it!
I have two crowns, and I am terrified of the dentist. Here's two secrets: 1) bring along a Walkman with some good tapes (I especially like books on tape) and 2) close your eyes!! Have a signal with the dentist (mine is I raise my hand) to tell him/her to stop when you need a break or if you're uncomfortable.

It's a lot worse in your imagination than it is in real life.

15. Great idea!
I'll have to find my Walkman. Too bad there's no baseball game on while I'm there!

Or so I hear, because I never had one, but they are notoriously the worst dentist visit.

You will be fine. Now shut up and get me another beer. :-)
