Any "Avengers" fans here?
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 11:08 AM by WI_DEM
I just got a box set of "The Avengers" from 1967 with Patrick MacNee as John Steed and Diana Rigg as Mrs. Emma Peel. I love this show. It is the best secret agent series ever on television and is always done so tongue firmly in cheek.

What I didn't know was that "The Avengers" had actually started in 1961 as a series called, "Police Surgeon" with Steed as the partner of some guy and then when he left the series, Steed was paired with a series of beautiful but self effecient partners like Mrs. Gale played by Honor Blackman (later Pussy Galore in "Goldfinger") and Mrs. Peel.

What I really love about this series is that Steed treated his female partners as equals and this during the 60's. Mrs. Peel could take care of herself and Steed knew this and they had a sexy by-play which was never acted upon--and such humor.

Just love this series.

p.s.
also one of the best theme tunes of any tv-series.

1. Of course.
I've been a fan since I was about seven years old and I saw it on early-evening re-runs.

2. I loved it!
I was madly in love with Diana Rigg..........

and yes, she was a strong female and even in the '60s I didn't feel threatened or offended by her model.

4. Mrs. Peel and I go way back.
I suppose I was about 10 when we were first 'acquainted'.

10. Avengers

Find the episode called "Honey for the Prince" and then
remember that this was BEFORE Barbara Eden and the whole
"Can't show the belly button" thing.

Also find "A touch of Brimstone"... Emma Peel in a total
Dominatrix outfit... waaaay cool.

Actually, M. Appeal.

6. I love that show!
For me, the Stead and Mrs. Peel episodes were the best. I was crazy for Mrs. Peel -- I thought she was the coolest woman in the world and wanted to grow up and dress just like her. Alas, at 5'4 with no waist, that is simply just not possible. :(

7. I and my attempted girlfriend used to refer to ourselves
as "Steed and Mrs. Peel".

Hmm, that sounds like a Porn star and a stripper . . .

Anyway, I loved the tongue-in-cheek humor of that series, along with the cutie-pie Purdy in "The New Avengers".

9. Heck yeah! Got all the Emma Peel boxed sets
Steed was so funny back in the Police Surgeon days, and evena bit with Honor Blackman. They tried to make him look like a street tough or a gangster type. Love how he transformed into a gentleman instead.

11. Anyone remember the "New Avengers" in the 70s?
I was a little young to remember the "Avengers" when it started.

My friends and I were all crazy about Gambit, the guy who helped out Steed and Purdy.
