I'm listening to all of Steely Dan's work, in order
AND I'm including "Nightfly" and "Karmakiriad" cause face it, they really were Dan albums.

Record Plant in 1974...good show despite Becker rushing through all the songs due to stagefright.

ON EDIT: I love Steely Dan too - the stuff reminds me heavily of my Peace Corps days...rolling down a Thai highway at 180 kmph while blasting Green Earrings on the walkman.....

5. And Don't Forget "11 Tracks of Whack" by Walter Becker
although some people hated it, I personally thought it had some great cuts.

8. Touché, my friend...
Steely Dan is great. The soundtrack of my childhood. Even as a kid it mesmerized me as much as it still does today.

10. Whats funny is all they're songs are references to things in their lives
Some coded, some not. Kid Charlegmane was all about Ed "Bear" Owsley and the acid he used to make.

There were other refs...

14. Shudder to think what "Black Friday" was about....
I have found that most folks are of two minds about SD. Either you love them or you hate them. I think the cryptic lyrics turn alot of people off; if its not right there, forget it. The musicianship, and the complexity of the music is what caught me.

15. Same here....the two know how to write hooks
And they know who to hire to play those hooks too.

My brother can't stand them, since they did most of their work with session musicians.

I love their stuff tho...

16. Buddy of mine feels the same way..
He likes 'em, but he says they're rather plastic. He claims they lack spontaneity and fire because all the parts and solos were worked out in advance. Who cares, says I. Thats what I love about them, it all fits so well.

17. Yeah it kind of reminds me of Wagner's Gestankuntzverk
He would hire the best artists to paint the backdrops for his operas, hire the best vocalists, musicians and even would use his buddy Lizst to write a few hooks for him on occasion (that was until he stole his wife...) all in order to create the "ultimate work of art."

Of course, Wagner was also a serious anti-semite and nationalist nut...

20. Didn't know about the "Gestankuntzverk"....
Edited on Thu Apr-08-04 05:45 PM by foamdad
hell, I can barely pronounce it. I guess you lean something new everyday. There is a point where too many collaborators makes a piece become less than the composer's vision. I don't think SD crossed that line, however. From what I heard Fagen and Becker were firmly at the reins while in the studio. And why not get the best guys to play the parts you wrote?

Wagner - like some of the music (not an opera buff), dislike his politics. Sorry 'bout the wife, Richard!

11. Don't forget Century's End
much more Dan-like Fagen solo than Nightfly, which is him reminiscing about/recreating the 50s. You also need Rosie Vela's record Zazu, or at least the title song. The first Steely Dan reunion, and you've never heard anything until you've heard Rosie sing: "Imagination's my business." Creepy fansite here: http://home.satx.rr.com/zimbob/magicsmile/zazuhome.html (Do NOT read the lyrics!)

12. 1973 - Ohio State University

Steely Dan (an actual band then and touring in support for Can't Buy A Thrill and the yet to be released Countdown To Ecstasy) were the opening act for... The Beach Boys.

Quite a pairing... and an interesting show, as well.

So much good stuff!

Thanks for posting this... I just remembered a line from one of their songs that I just love love LOVE!

~All that right wing hooey sure stunk up the joint~

I may be screwing up the words... I want to hear it NOW!

Yeah I screwed it up... it's really "That right-wing hooey sure stunk up the joint" from Jack of Speed on Everything Must Go.

*sigh* I missed their show last year.

22. OK I will out music-geek everyone here
Steely Dan, before making it big, wrote a lot of music for other bands, one of which was the never-heard of band (for good reason) Navasota.

They also did one soundtrack, You Gotta Walk it Like you Talk It. Horrible album too.
