A devil in the sense of an angry, jealous, and possibly insane god? Possibly. I don't belive in a literal devil that sits on our shoulders guiding us into evil; humanity's good enough at that on its own. In the sense that there may be malevolent, extradimensional beings that can effect their will upon the temporal world under certain circumstances; maybe. Satan, in the eyes of Gnostics, was the Demiurge; the prince of this world. The Demiurge created the world and demanded fealty from humanity. Lucifer, the lightbringer possibly corresponding to Phoebus Apollo in the Greek, is considered as a being that imparted divine knowledge to mankind. For this, he was made into an evil god. The Yaweh/JHVH of the old testament is considered to be the maniacal Demiurge that demands blood sacrifice. Lucifer was only associated with the Hebrew Satan in, I think, the 4th or 5th century. On edit: In Persian Manichean dualism, Ahriman, the satan figure, is the brother of the sun god Ahura Mazda. I think a lot of Xtian origins of divine duality come from Persian theology.

9. It's an amazing belief.... |
|
I mean, my daughter knew kids in high school who really did believe there's this red-skinned goateed fellow, with horns & pitchfork (why a pitchfork) who resides in a very hot place underground where he amuses himself and his underlings torturing damned souls. And for recreation popping up on the earthly plane to tempt us. Isn't that just amazing, when you mull it over? There truly are people who believe such a being physically exists.

After baiting me attacking Dems, one of those supposedly non-political types told me not to sweat it, that he's not really interested in politics (and I doubt he will vote)--------
I said that DANTE had said the hottest part of Hell was reserved for those who didn't take a stand. (I realize in the Inferno, it is actually ICE.) He replied that there is no Hell.
I said, "If Shrub wins (or steals) another 4 years, you're going to find out what Hell is."

Distorting our perceptions and warping our view of ourselves and the Universe at large.
That distortion is helpful by making us more receptive to the time we have things in focus.

growing up in an abusive household, being trapped in a bad relationship, election day 2000, working in a dead end job, not having any relationships. These could be a few examples of hell. The devil at work. We can see the evil everyday and see the devil at work. So where is God. above it all waiting to pass judgement on the people who live in hell everyday. Maybe God and the devil are one in the same. We were created for his amusement. :evilfrown:
