Horrible experience this evening
I was going shopping on my way home from work. As I pulled into the parking space, I was listening to the baseball game. I sat for just a minute and then a couple and their son came to their vehicle, parked next to mine. I turned the engine off, but waiting for them to get into their car before I got out of mine. Apparently the man had the same idea, and he said something to me, but my window was rolled up, so I didn't hear him. Then the woman started screaming that they were waiting for me to get out

So I rolled down my window and gently started to say that I was merely waiting for them, and she starts really screaming and cursing. "You f*ing b*tch! You gonna start with me now? You go to f*ing hell you fat f*ing bitch!"

I was stunned. I knew that if I went back at her in kind it would just escalate. So instead I said, "I don't know what has made you so angry, but I hope it goes away soon, and I hope you have a nice Easter."

I thought maybe if I responded w/ kindness she would realize that there was no need for the tirade she was on.

How did she respond?

"I hope you f* off and die you fat f*ing bitch!"

Again, I'm stunned, so I just sat in my car with the window up, and didn't even look at her. I just looked forward and shrugged my shoulders.

Then this woman walked over to my car and spit on my driver's side window.

No kidding.

Three things went through my head.

1) Her kid is going to grow up thinking that that's the way to treat people. Her kid will grow up to be a monster and she'll wonder why.

2) She driving! She's in a fit of anger over something and she's behind the wheel w/ two passengers. She's likely to kill someone.

3) I didn't deserve to have someone muck up my day like that. I was having a pretty good day, and those are pretty rare lately. Why couldn't I have parked next to someone who would smile and say "Happy Friday"?

The world sure is cold.

That is disgusting! I mean, it's one thing if the woman had a crappy day and is totally stressed out or pms-ing, and gives you a dirty look or something; but to act like that is totally unacceptable! I'm sorry you had to experience that, and I hope it doesn't ruin your day!

That's the only explanation for such obviously anti-social behavior.

I'm sorry about your experience! Most people aren't like that.

I would have gotten her license plate number and alerted the local police of a possible aggressive driver.

my friend has a stepmother down here who has done the kind of crap you described since she had a brain tumor removed in 1998. Seriously, she is THAT anti-social and horrid to total strangers over nothing on a routine basis! She's lost all her friends because of her abusive behavior and the doctor's haven't found anything that helps her yet.

I'm so sorry that you were put through that, MissMillie.

15. Ah, grasshopper. Universe merely teaching you
to appreciate the warmth you find in life, as it is not a given. And to learn to harden your hide to the frigid depths of Universe insult, not the heart. Your attacker was expressing and challenging you to a suffering battle. No-one wins those. Good choice. Those who will not be contended with, cannot be contended with.

It helps to know aikido though. In case Universe decides to shake your tree hard. In aikido you learn to roll. and roll. and roll. Then later to throw, which is not so hard, not as hard as learning to roll gracefully and successfully. Since most aggressive peoples are hard due to the nature of agression, when thrown, they don't roll so well and rarely trouble one with a request for a repeat throw.

28. I blame society and those who control it...
Ever increasing frantic pace people have to go through and for less pay, an increasingly hostile when not fascist environment... people are going to get stressed.

The only answer is to change society to make it healthy for people again. And not make some fucking pill which will get some people to adapt, albeit with harmful long term side-effects.

35. an artist in harlem
there is an artist in harlem that, amongst other things, writes little life lessons on the sidewalks in chalk.

his name is de la vega. (maybe that is dela vega..?)

one little gem of wisdom that is short and to the point, and certainly fits your experience:

don't let idiots ruin your day

i know it is very hard to let things like what happened to you not affect you, but just remember, they ARE idiots. and everyone sees it and realizes it. that woman is probably hated by most, and she knows it, which makes her that much more angry. she hates herself, and projects it on others. you can be assured that she is an very unhappy person.

37. This does seem to happen more and more as someone else pointed out
My husband and I were driving on the interstate and traffic was heavy. There was a construction zone coming up and the lanes narrowed. Long story short, we couldn't get over in time (along with a lot of other folks). People in the next lane were taking turns letting people in - then it was our turn and instead of stopping, some kid in an SUV gunned his engine, shouted obscenities and spit in the passenger window where I was sitting and squealed past us. I am sure he thought my husband and I were a couple of old farts and social Darwinism would prevail.

I think the hubby would have let it go except for the fact that this asshole spit on me. Not that he got out of the car or anything - however he did floor the Infinity and smoke the guy's ass. A new SUV may be a status-y sort of thing in some circles, but it just doesn't quite make the cut when it comes to acceleration. I believe we left him open-mouthed about 5 cars back. Last we saw he was just a pair of faint headlights on the horizon. It was a good day for the tribal elders...and a bad day for bad-mannered punks in SUVs.

42. I’m so very sorry that you had to endure this MissMillie
Edited on Fri Apr-09-04 09:59 PM by socialdemocrat1981
Some people can be so heartless, cruel and vindictive sometimes and this woman sounds like an absolutely she absolutely fits the category. One day her mean and spiteful behaviour will have consequences for her and she’d better be prepared for reaping what she sows.

Don’t give her another thought MissMillie. Your thoughtfulness, kindness and intelligence –comprehensively demonstrated in this situation-makes you a far better person than she could ever amount to being. You acted in a way that provides a great testament to your character and your quiet dignity, patience and kindness in the face of adversity should be what you take away from the whole incident.

It's the Easter long weekend (or at least it is a long weekend in Australia and I presume it would be the same in the US). Think good thoughts, go home and unwind and relax, spend some time with your son and dwell on all the things in your life that give you happiness. Please don't give this whole incident another thought

But once again I am so, so, very sorry for what happened to you. Sending positive thoughts and prayers your way

Tou are one of my favorite posters here on DU, MissMillie. Take care of yourself:)

I'm driving along a two lane highway, and come up behind a slowpoke. Traffic is coming against us, so I wait a couple of minutes (not tailgating) until the coast is clear. So I signal nicely, pull out to pass, and what do I see? The driver's middle finger stuck against the side window. :wtf: What did I do? People sure are weird, I'm glad I'm not affected by road rage.

56. Had a similar thing happen
one time. Was driving down an unfamiliar road and a car was well behind me. I realized that it was a dead end, with just a housing development at the end, so I put on my turn signal and pulled over on the shoulder to let the car go by. Instead of going by, the driver also pulled over somewhat behind me. Obviously, she didn't know it was a dead end either. Anyway, I waited for a bit and she didn't move, so I made a U-turn to leave. She started up, raced up behind me and started blowing the horn, then roared past, shaking her fist and screaming. Couldn't hear what she was screaming because of the windows being up. My husband was with me and we just looked at each other, "What's up with her? She must be crazy."

You can't take things like that personally. There are just crazy people.
