'East Infection.

I fear going to the movies this Sunday. It almost seems as if people are viewing The Passion of the Christ as an extension of their religious duties for Easter. As if it's a part of actual religion. As if it's something they NEED to do. As Charlie Sheen once said so eloquently: "Pack your bags, we're going on a guilt trip."

Here's what bothers me. It's a movie. Made by a guy we've paid to see in films with bladed boomerang tossing feral children. It's not the gospel handed down by the patron saint of Panavision. It's a movie and it's not an "official" church product. Do you see Casper Van Dien ANYWHERE on the cast list?

Here are reasons TO go see The Passion of the Christ this weekend:

1. You haven't seen it and you want to.

2. You have seen it and you want to.

3. You have a term paper on 'excessive beatings in film' to research.

Otherwise, though you want to honor the shepherd please don't be a sheep. I've heard people on the radio, at the bookstore, and in restaurants saying that they're going to Easter service and seeing The Passion of the Christ at the movie theater of the AMC as if seeing the film is just another part of your religious duty.

Bah. Go outside and throw a Frisbee with your kids.
