5. I have several
Chatting on the 'net. Heh. :hi:

Exercise. Seriously. I have to, and one of the benefits is handling stress better.

Music. Can't get through a day without listening to some music, usually rock, often classical.

My spirituality. I like delving into the metaphysical and looking at the longer picture rather than being stressed about the moment.

14. You're so punny.
mmmm... cold turkey ;)

Seriously, that's the very thing that made me realize that Overeaters Anonymous was a waste of my time -- after two years of "keep coming back, it works when you work it." :eyes: Yeah. It works. When you're trying to give up something your body does NOT need! I'm sure OA works for some people. For me it was a two-year mind-f'ing guilt trip.

Have you recovered from your miserable ordeal yesterday? I've been in similar nasty circumstances. There's nothing but to cry and be angry and just let it flow out of you with time.

17. I tried OA too... was very turned off.
First they tell you that you don't have to follow a "diet" because "diets don't work"... so then when you ask about being in recovery, they tell you they're putting you on an "eating plan." When I asked them to clarify that, they said, "well, I guess it's a diet after all." Then I asked the woman what qualifications she had to design an eating plan for me.... doctor? nutritionist? nurse? She had none.

I am better since yesterday, thanks. Someone posted that I was not the only person cursed at and spit upon on Good Friday. Made me realize that I was in good company.

21. "what qualifications she had to design an eating plan for me"
That's another of my beefs with 12-step programs being twisted to cover eating disorders. I believe if you're a recovering alcoholic, but not a therapist or doctor, you're still qualified to help another recovering alcoholic. You have been there and you know exactly what the other guy is experiencing.

While a recovering compulsive overeater similarly can assist another in recovery, having been where s/he is does NOT qualify the "sponsor" or whatever to design a diet for the other person. :grr:

Many of us (listen up, fat phobes) cannot lose weight by will-power, self-control, or even common-sense eating. I guarantee you that 95% of people who know they have a problem already know how to lose weight. For many of us, the problem is not will-power. It's partly medical and partly psychological. :climbs off soap-box:

I've found a medical weight loss plan. I have to wait until I can afford it -- cash up front, my insurance MIGHT reimburse me 50% -- but in the meantime I am still cramming my face -- and gaining weight for the first time in years. :eyes:

About being cursed & spit at: I'm glad someone drew the comparison for you. I'm glad it helped.

And: mopaul: sorry for hijacking your thread w/ this tangent.

13. Crutches
I used to eat too much (probably my life's biggest crutch), smoked on and off, even had a bout with drinking too much briefly toward the end of my high school years, but I hate crutches. I really do. When one focuses their energies on some THING outside themselves, it detracts from the real issues of life. Over the past couple of years, I've tackled these demons, but with demons, one must stay vigilant to keep them from rearing their ugly head again. It's about self-destruction really and I don't want to go there ever again.

So, I guess I'll put in in terms of how I relax at the end of the day. Music relaxes me. Reading can do it. A nice long walk. Sometimes this place can (but sometimes I need something to decompress after a visit to DU, especially after reading the political stuff). Other things are good too, but they're personal. :7

15. The two C's
Caffeine and Cannabis. I have basically given up all my other vices and do not consider either of these to be a vice. Crutch? I don't know if it's a crutch but it is how I choose to live.

19. I was a daily pot smoker...
...but I quit when I got pregnant. It wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. I loved pot, but I actually don't really miss it. After I'm done breast feeding, I don't know if I'll smoke again or not. Maybe occasionally, but I think I'm probably just going to be way too busy for it.

I'm a lot better about it now, though. I don't drink Diet Coke everyday anymore and drink a lot more water when I do. Diet Vanilla Pepsi is also a weakness of mine. Good to know that I'm ont alone.

25. i'm hooked on trees as well..
I've managed to stop for periods of time, up to 5-6 weeks. But then I always ask myself why? It's just something I really enjoy. No different than coming home from work, and having a beer or two, really.
