Vigil with Gov Rendell in Narbeth PA: End of Assault Rifle Ban - 09/13 |
|
Vigil with Ed Rendell by the Gazebo outside the Narberth Borough Municipal Building 100 Conway Avenue, Narberth, PA
When: 8:00 PM, Monday, September 13, 2004 Who: Governor Ed Rendell Congressman Joe Hoeffel State Senator Connie Williams 6th District Congressional Candidate Lois Murphy police officers gun violence prevention advocates Tomorrow (Monday) at midnight, the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban signed by President Clinton is set to expire.
The 19 assault weapons banned by the law—including the AK-47, TEC-9 and M-16 will become perfectly legal. Ten years ago, we knew that assault weapons were the weapons of choice for gang bangers and drug dealers, today we know that added to that list are terrorists, foreign and domestic. We even know that Al-Qaeda, in its training manuals, instructed operatives that in countries like the United States, it’s perfectly legal for members of the public to own certain types of firearms. If you live in such a country, obtain an assault rifle legally, preferably an AK-47 or variations.” President Bush promised to sign a renewal of the Assault Weapons Ban if it landed on his desk, but has worked behind the scenes to ensure that his fellow Texan Tom Delay doesn’t let that happen. No renewal of the ban will get through Congress with this President and this leadership in the House and Senate. In doing so he has failed to keep America safe. Monday night, Governor Ed Rendell and Congressman Joe Hoeffel will mark the expiration of the Assault Weapons Ban and call on the President to exercise leadership in keeping these weapons off the street.
Place: Narberth Borough Hall Gazebo Time: 8:00-11:00 pm What: Governor Ed Rendell, Rep. Joe Hoeffel and others mark the expiration of the assault weapons ban.
I'm thinking of driving up for this one. It's about an hour from my house and worth the drive!!

1. A lot of hyperbole and misinformation there |
|
The 19 assault weapons banned by the law—including the AK-47, TEC-9 and M-16 will become perfectly legal. The M16 is legally classified as a machinegun. Its legal status has not changed. The assault weapons ban affected only semiautomatic firearms. Please see http://www.atf.gov/ for some real information.

2. Thank you for the update |
|
I did not write the text but I think it's still an important event that other DUers in the area might want to attend. Real information is Bush is once again lying to us. He claims he would sign an extension on the ban but his goons in congress refuse to do anything to get the bill to him to sign.
This is what the anger is about. By gathering together for the vigil it's a way for Pennsylvanians, a swing state, will see why we are upset about this issue. Hopefully we'll make the 11pm news!

3. Bush Lied Again is the correct position to take IMO |
|
We must be careful not to spread misinformation or disinformation in the process of pointing out Bush's prevarication. Nothing destroys credibility faster than engaging in that which you accuse the opposition of doing.

4. BTW - The story about the AQ training manual is bogus |
|
See http://www.usdoj.gov/ag/trainingmanual.htmand http://cryptome.org/alq-terr-man.htm#7The only references to the AK-47 are in a discussion of the history of firearms. I wish Senator Kerry would stop spreading this urban legend. It's going to backfire on him.
