My Results In Boycotting GOP Businesses has been great...
I've done it quietly and with respect. I've just let them know if they are a contributor to the GOP that I am not interested in their services or products. I had an insurance agent tell me proudly that he voted for the W as if it was a selling point. When I told him we had no need to listen to his spiel any longer he looked shocked and outraged. This is heavy GOP land. I smiled to myself as he walked away. I encourage all to use our buying power as a campaign tool.

Please PM me with your experiences with various individuals/firms.

See this thread. We're trying to put a clearing house together for this.

3. Please let us know when this is done.
Edited on Thu Nov-04-04 11:45 PM by Nicholas_J
I would like to begin taking part of boycotts of Republican businesses and want to get the local democratic party to do this. I made many freinds with people on the executive comitte of the county party, and they would all be very willing to start a campaign to contact as many democratic voters here to begin lboycotting national companies and local companies at this level.

I will try to start figuring ways to create a "Liberal Yellow Pages" at this local level with the democratic party people I know. You know Christians do that in localities, and tere is no reason we could not create a yellow pages of businesses that backed Kerry and those that backed Bush so people know who to avoid, and how to contact them to tell them why.

7. Great Nicholas!
This is exactly what we had in mind. Local and national levels.

I'll try to come up with a form letter or something to send to Dem HQs all over the country to get them to brainstorm with their members on experiences that they've had with local businesses.

Sapphocrat is going to help as well, and has DB space and bandwidth for this. So if you get your local stuff compiled, let us know.

10. I just emailed my friend from the Duval County DemocraticParty
Executive Comittee. He is an ex Marine, is well connected among Duval Democratic Lawyers and political figures. I floated the local yellow pages idea in my email.

This guy is rather down right now and I think he needs some fighting therapy as well. He was riding around all night, every night of the last months, replacing Kerry/Edwards signs all over the eastern districts of this countty, amoong other things.

We can try to get together a list of busineses, plus the ones ou guys will put togetther for national businesses, and create a Democrats Yellow pages like I suggested. This will include businesses to boycott, as well as alternative businesse to switch to or buy from that supported Kerry.

It is amazing how few people it takes to effect even a large business. Tebn thousand at the national level could be extremely detrimental. It took very little to effect Sinclairs decision. I was listening to some right wing radio creep referring to a bunch of radical democrats on an internet web site who pushed Sinclair into not doing its thing, and I beleive he was referring to DU. He was furious, representing us as trying to prevent free speech and all that conservative B.S. I treid calling his telephone as he is one of the few who will not screen calls form liberals, and one of the few who does not get abusive if you do not get abusive. I think the guy is named Mike Gallagher. I have heard some libeals make there point with him and he doent get nuts attacking them after you get on the line, But anytime a dem gets abusive he does use it to try to show how nuts demos are. I was laughing my ass off when I head him referring to what I really beleived was a reference to DU.

11. Cool.
with enough help from folks all over the country, we should e able to put together a nice comprehensive list.

And thank your buddy for his hard work. I figure...I've got 4 more years to sit and think of something to do . Might as well be this!

12. Which Duval County, Nick?
What state are you in?

Because I'm thinking of mailing Dem heads in every county of every state for more info on what they've found. Don't want to duplicate the work if I don't have to! :-)

13. Florida
During the campaign, about several months ago, when I was at the public library. saw a meeting letting out and A couple of people standing around putting Kerry signs in the back of a truck. I went up and introduced myself and it turned out that one of them was a member of the county's executive comittee, and they liked the fact that I was very up on every poll. I told them about DU and othe sites and they asked if I could do some help in phone banking, as well as emailing them any info that I thought was relevant to them getting out the vote. They have me their email and home phone and called my house to see what I thought after the results of virtually every poll. One of the ex-com members asked if I wanted to get togetther alfter the election to form a political consulting firm, and we are thinking about how to get together on that right now. I emailed them last night after I saw this post and asked about the idea of getting together on this boycott idea. All we have to do is get around ten percent of all people who did not want Bush elected to boycott these companies and we can have serious effects on the economy that will make it difficult for the president to cliam he is doing wonders form the economy.

Out of all of the people who were on the comittee, the one I am incontact with most often has taken the election loss vert hard. This guy is an ex marine, and has had considerable experience in local government here. He is rather down, but give him a means to fight and he will grasp it with both hands. I didnt see any democrat who so heaviily invested himself in this campaign. I will let you know. If you are here in Flororida as well \, maybe we can all put this together. It is going to be hard to find a lot of democratic businesses in the hell-hole of northern florida, but you dont know if you dont try. When I think of the effect that DU had on Sinclair, and even it's stock, I think we might be able to punch out the lights on Wall Street if we try a little harder.

16. I'm actually
in Texas, but e-mail works wonders nowadays.

There's also the matter of asking progressive businesses if they WANT to be included. Some people don't want to lose their anonymity and could get angry if we out them.

2. I'm moving
our investment accounts. They're tiny, but I don't want a republican asshole managing my kids' college money. I knew he was a republican, and we've even argued about politics... but he made a fatal mistake when he sent me a 'list of life's lessons' or some such bullshit, a few days before the election. One of the rules was something like, "You aren't entitled to anything, you have to make your own way." I'm going to send the thing back to him, with a note that he should send it to his president, who has had a sense of entitlement all of his life.

And the 6 accounts head out the door.

Check the magazine Utne Reader for some info on other funds (I found a copy at Whole Foods) if you can. I checked into 2. I know Domini is one, and the other is something like PaxWorld.

They try to invest in socially environmentally responsible companies to make us feel better about where our money is going.

And send me the asshole's name and company! ;-)

17. National Federation of Independent Businesses
NFIB is *supposed* to be a small business lobbying organization.

They sent out so much free campaign literature for Bush that we will never renew our membership with them.

They only stand for the biggest of "small" business.

20. I would love to have a dem/progressive buying guide!
Animal rights orgs put out lists of companies that don't do animal testing so why not a listing of dem friendly companies? I know there are socially responsible investing funds but as I don't have the $ I can't help that way. I would like to do what I can with my little bit of buying power. If enough of us do it our collective tiny bites will make one big chunk!
