4. Thanks.
It sure would be neat if progressives could get together and show their power.

Someone on this Board has mentioned it already. Could you please comment on the whole thing.

Democracy for America meeting in my area on 1/5/2005.

I found the link that gives more info. But one day seems fine to show the power of progressives.

Other people are actually going to D.C. to protest, so I figure this is one small thing that I can do. I'll mention it to people around me too.

Wasn't that a song? "I've got the power."

Anyway, I'm in. Let's give them a little pin prick where they feel it most-- in their pocketbooks.

16. That's fine. The rest of us will take up the slack.
We're moving to buying only from 'Blue' companies/stores, anyway. They think they're a majority? Pfffft. Wait until they don't get any money from the 'minority'.

19. And: DON'T go to work, either!
(notice: I cross-posted this notice in another thread about NODDD...figure it bears repeating here.)

It's not just by buying products that THEY make money off of us.

On January 20th, I earnestly urge DUers (and anyone who cares about democracy in America) to also make their voice heard by calling in sick to work.

Why? Simple. Not only corporations, but the government make money off of our labor. Each day at work is more dollars in taxes for the federal government - more dollars for the Pentagon, more dollars for the CIA, more dollars for Bush.

The idea, of course, isn't to bring the government or big corporations to a screaming halt by not working for a day; it is to demonstrate, in the language they best understand - dollars - that progressives DO have the commitment to act together to show their opposition to four more years of the barbarous Bush regime.

If you can, please check out Black-Thursday.com for more information.

If you like the idea, please also help spread the word to others you feel may be interested. Many thanks.

I really like the idea. I most certainly won't spend any money, and I'm tempted to get a job just so i can not go. Good luck though!

23. N1DD!
I'm in. Also planning on sending an email to "sympathizers" a couple of days before as a reminder. Will need to make sure we have enough gas in the car, food in the lunchbox, etc.

My only co-worker who ever offers to pick up lunch for me (I almost always work straight through the day) is also "in". Maybe I'd better pack his lunch too. :)

24. My wife and I are on board.
this is an easy one, but if the numbers make a dent it could wake some people up, maybe.

Unless there is a full Congressional investigation of the vote fraud this will happen again!

Contact the Judiciary Committee, tell them to investigate!

Tell everyone you know!

athough I don't spend much money during the week anyway. I bring my lunch and I carpool to work. I will be wearing black, and probably one of my t-shirts that says "voter fraud is not a mandate. george bush is not my president." That ought to piss off my republican boss.

27. I'm so glad I found this thread
Hi:

I'm a newbie to DU. I belong to a lot of anti-bush, anti-rw, anti-neocon yahoo groups, I even moderate a few. I really have made this STRIKE ON THE US ECONOMY my mission in life right now. I kept on looking at DU and couldn't find one and then someone told me about this one. There's a great site with a wonderful flyer at:
http://www.black-thursday.com/home.html

BLACK THURSDAY, January 20, 2005
The Idea Is Simple.
Just Like The President.

This January 20th:

- Call in sick to work
- Don't buy anything
...and write to your newspaper, your senator and your representative to tell them why.

FABULOUS FLYER!
http://www.black-thursday.com/thursdayflyer.pdf

And yes, we are trying to make this into more than just not spending money. I have been circulating an email for about a month. Here's part of it with some suggestions:
PROTEST THE ILLEGAL INAUGURATION OF DUBYA

For 24 Hours SHUT DOWN THE U.S. ECONOMY

-- If you are an employee, take Thursday, January 20 off. Take a vacation day, a personal day, call in sick. I don't care. Just don't work. (Emergency workers excluded).

-- If you own a business, (and I realize this is a very big request), close down your business on January 20. Put a message on your voicemail letting anyone who calls know why you are closed. Put a sign in your window. Just do it!

-- If you have a website, take it down, and put up a page that says your business is closed because you are mourning the death of your country, the end of democracy and the US as we have known it, the stolen election and the illegal inauguration of bush!

-- If you have friends outside the US, tell them not to buy an american product, an american stock, conduct business with an american firm, nothing!

-- AND NO ONE HERE BUYS A THING! Not a bottle of water, a pay-per-view movie, a candy bar, a gallon of gas, a pack of cigarettes, nothing. Get organized and do it the day before.

While you are sitting home, pick up the phone and call the media and tell them what you are doing. (This is the ONLY thing you are allowed to spend money on.) Call your senators and representatives if you think it will do any good.

They wouldn't listen to us when we called and emailed and filed lawsuits. They thought that they were going to steal our country and our freedom, send us to war, put the profits in their pockets and then rub our faces in it by inaugurating bush? I say NO WAY!

Do you think we can get a critical mass of people to do this? Does anyone have any union contacts?

28. I will
I've already adjusted my spending so I don't have to give anymore than necessary to GOP supporters. It will be easy to not spend a dime for one day. I really have to go to work that day so at least I can do this. I'm also going to wear black from head to toe that day.

33. I'm going out to lunch with a big group tomorrow but
I'm not going to order any food. I requested that we go somewhere cafeteria-style so I'm not stiffing a waitress out of tip or anything.

I will also be dressed in all black except for one of my Cafe Press t-shirts that says "Voter Fraud is Not a Mandate. George Bush is Not My President."
