Dear Friends,

On the anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's Birthday,

Join the Troops Out Now Coalition
on Saturday, January 15, 11:30 am
for a

Press Conference and Rally
on the steps of New York CITY HALL -

To Announce the Saturday, March 19 Rally in Central Park

BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW!

END THE OCCUPATION OF IRAQ
MONEY FOR JOBS, HEALTHCARE, SCHOOLS & HOUSING - NOT WAR
HANDS OFF SOCIAL SECURITY

The Troops Out Now coalition invites you join a crowd of activists and leaders from dozens of organizations representing labor, the clergy, antiwar groups, veterans, housing and student groups, as well as members of the NY City Council, and others, on the steps of NY City Hall at 11:30 am on January 15, the anniversary of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, to announce plans for a massive antiwar march and rally in Central Park on Saturday March 19, the second anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

We've chosen Dr. King's birthday to make our announcement because, more than simply remembering Dr. King, we believe that trying to emulate his courage in the struggle against racism and against the war in Vietnam is more important than ever. We believe the best way to honor his memory is to continue the struggle against war and racism.
Last March, tens of thousands of people marched against the war in NYC, along with more than million across the world. This year we must be even stronger.

As the death toll mounts in Iraq, we face a war at home against working and poor people. Everything that society needs more of instead of less, from healthcare, to affordable education and housing, to jobs with decent wages, and now even social security is under attack. Bush is putting the final touches on a budget that he will send to Congress next month that feeds the war machine and starves everything else. At the same time that Congress is asked to approve $100 billion more for war, subway stations in NYC will be closed and transit fares will be up, making it even harder for the growing numbers of laid-off workers to search for jobs. We must say no Bush, and fight back like we mean it.

We have selected Central Park for the location of the rally on Saturday, March 19, because we believe that in the wake of Mayor Bloomberg's rdenial of a permit for a rally in Central Park during the Republican Party Convention, it is all the more necessary that we refuse to allow last summer's unacceptable violation of our rights to establish a precedent.

The Troops Out Now coalition has come together to build the March 19 protest, and through that process, forge greater unity not only within the antiwar movement, but between the antiwar movement and community and labor organizations, leaders and activists. The name of our coalition is a reflection of our central demand: the immediate withdrawal of all troops from Iraq, and an end to the U.S. war and occupation. But this demand by no means reflects full the extent of our concern.
