David Brock Gives Reading of Misstating the State of the Union; George Washington University College Democrats Host Event Jan. 31

1/28/2005 5:54:00 PM

To: Assignment Desk and Daybook Editor

Contact: Jenny Brennan, 202-544-7881 or brennan@a2pr.com

News Advisory:

Who: David Brock, author of the best-selling books Republican Noise Machine and Blinded by the Right, and founder of Media Matters for America, a not-for profit research and information center dedicated to comprehensively monitoring, analyzing, and correcting conservative misinformation in the U.S. media, and Media Matters Action Network, the sister organization of Media Matters for America.

What: David Brock will give a reading and book signing of Misstating the State of the Union: Right Wing Media Distortions About the Clinton and Bush Presidencies, the first publication by Media Matters Action Network. This event is sponsored by the George Washington University College Democrats.

When: Monday, Jan. 31 from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Where: The George Washington University, Cloyd Heck Marvin Center, 3rd Floor Amphitheater -- 800 21st Street NW, Washington, D.C., 20052

Why: Conservative misinformation, defined as news or commentary presented in the media that is not accurate, reliable, or credible and that forwards the conservative agenda, is being spread into mainstream media venues through a network of talk radio shows, cable television, political pundits, partisan think tanks, and high-traffic Internet sites. As a result, this misinformation filters into public discourse about critical issues of the day.

Misstating the State of the Union exposes the long-standing conservative campaign to systematically deny the proven success of progressive policies and leadership while shamelessly covering up abject conservative failures. Progressive policies have led to declining divorce and abortion rates, improved education, and an effective retirement security program for seniors, while conservative policies, meanwhile, have led to soaring deficits, increased crime, and a stagnant job market.

A healthy democracy depends on public access to accurate and reliable information. That is why Media Matters for America is dedicated to alerting news outlets and consumers to the presence of conservative misinformation -- wherever we find it, in every news cycle -- and to spurring progressive activism based on standards and accountability in the media.

2. Wish I could go.
But, I'm out here in California - and I have to study for the CalBar test. So, flying around the country is definitely out.
