How would y'all go about helping Dems adopt...
Edited on Sat Jul-09-05 11:38 AM by sojourner
a short, concise list of ideals that can be used as issue/policy talking points? Such a list might be helpful for the med(ia id)jits since they might make good little sound bytes, and also of use in communicating with our democratic leaders: senators, representatives, governers, etc?

I know I've seen these kinds of threads before...but haven't seen them come to much (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Since we're "activists" maybe THIS is the place and since 2006 midterm elections are fast approaching, NOW is the time.

Here's a place I propose we might start:

1. I get the feeling
that, in some respects, organizing liberals/progressives is like 'herding cats.'

The 'Big Tent' philosophy seems to preclude anything remotely like putting our ideals down in some semblance of order.

Perhaps some believe it's better to rage at the machine than try to repair it. It's certainly easier.

2. Not sure they BELIEVE that, but in practice it seems to be what happens.

4. Howard Dean's formulation: here's what 95% of Americans can agree on
this isn't a direct quote, but it's a good distillation

good schools
good jobs
affordable access to quality healthcare
safety (from foreign & domestic threats)

I would add:

fair taxes--the wealthy and corporations pay their fair share.

corporate & Wall street accountability

Ironclad policy not to overthrow democratically elected governments or intervene anywhere on behalf of oil companies, sweatshops, or plantation owners.

A mistake we have made in recent years is focusing on cultural issues, which allowed the democrats to become nearly as pro-corporate as the GOP.

If we want to be the majority, we need to get that economic agenda front and center, and constantly remind people that the GOP gives empty symbols that cost nothing to their middle and lower class supporters, but give the cold hard cash to the wealthy.

5. Check out the new Democratic Party website
It has been redesigned just a few weeks ago. It has a good list of issues.
