The Buffalo News Just called Me
They verified that I sent them a LTTE and confirmed my wish that they publish my Name and City, but not my contact information.

They also said it was a bit long and that they would have to condense it.

Does that mean that they intend to publish it, or are they just thinking about it?

Also won't it be interesting to see what parts they choose to take out?

2. They will print it.
They only call people whose letters they plan to print, or that's the usual practice here.

3. It will be published.
They usually call to verify that you were the one who wrote it before they print.

4. I don't know
My local paper has called me a couple of times to confirm my info in response to a LTTE I sent. But they never printed the letters. I hope you have better luck than I did.

5. Probably they will...
I have had quite a few letters to the editor published.

In my experience, if a newspaper bothers to take the time and money to contact you and verify your identity and willingness to be published, it intends to publish.

The edits that have been done on my letters have usually been fair. Only a few times have changes to which I might seriously object been made. And even then, the effect was not detrimental to my letter as a whole.

On one occasion, I was called about my letter, and the letter was not published. But that was because some suprising big news event occurred right after I was called (I can't remember what), I think, and hogged all the attention of the editorial page for a while.

6. It means they liked it, at least
I was called Wednesday night about the LTTE I sent to the Newark (NJ) Star-Ledger. The web page I mailed it from made it clear that they did not acknowlege receipt of all letters, and that their confirming a letter does not guarantee publication--only that they're considering it.

I didn't see my letter in today's online version. I'm assuming that they're holding it until Sunday for maximum exposure!

7. That's great!
Add another person who says it means it will be published. Editors can be strange. Sometimes they've done a bang up job condensing my stuff and at other times they've chopped the key point. Unfortunately you never know until you see it in print.

10. In my experience, they will publish an edited version
They first call to confirm that you did send it.

Most papers have an editorial policy that limits the number of words to 250 or less. Even those are likely to be cut.

Congratulations, keep up the good work.

12. The same thing happened to me....
in reference to this DU activist task with my local paper, the Daily review.

Normally they will print it, if they called....but not always. Once, I wrote a letter to a national magazine. They called, and said that they would print it, but it never made it. I did see a couple of other letters similar to mine being printed...which they may have gotten after the fact. Those letters were shorter, and this may be why mine was not published.

Anyways....Congrats! DU Activists Rock! :woohoo:
