Any ideas how to share text of LTTEs without revealing identity?
I sent mine to one paper; they called to confirm I'd sent it and asked if I'd sent it to others (I didn't).

If they run my letter, it will appear with my real name. If I post the contents of my letter here and tell you where it was submitted, any trolling freeper will know my identity.

I'm not ashamed of anything I've posted here and my financial security is relatively safe from (low-level) political persecution. That may not be the case for others, however.

Your thoughts?

1. Copy/paste it into the message on du
then go and put x's where your name is or anything that could identify you, other option is just delete your name and info you don't want known.

2. There are people who scare me.
Some say the best place to hide is in full public view.

I always thought that was a good idea as a high school teacher, especially when dealing with a recalcitrant.

4. If it's short enough...
just paraphrase it, and use synonyms if you're looking to stop someone from searching the text.

5. Simply ask they withhold your name
They will oblige, but they insist on the information as a condition for publication.

6. Some papers won't allow that.
The NY Times insists you give your real name and they call to verify. THEN they publish your name. I thought about this the other night when I sent my letter.

11. newspapers do, AFAIK
But Newsweek never called me. A bunch of people in my church told me, or I'd have never known my letter was published.

I didn't care for that nonverification; anybody could have sent that letter in my name.

12. That's frightening.
The NYTimes stipulates in their rules you must send your letter with your name, ADDRESS (which isn't published, just the city, and we all know easy it is to get that information) and phone numbers for verification.

14. in some cities
the newspapers print the addresses of all letter writers, which is probably why their letters are so insipid.

7. PM it to another DUer...

...and he can post it to DU as a "look at this editorial that got printed" thread.

8. this is actually a real problem
for there are blacklists plus in engineering especially speaking out
can get you blackballed and fired.

(gotta love America and the "corporate culture" superceding national
culture).

So, here's an idea: rent a PO BOX and use a voice mail freebie
via any online service...you have to get this stuff as your real person.
but put on the po box your "Pen name" and also in the voice mail.

Then you can publish letters to the editor and so on as your pen name.

10. That's a good idea
I've had stalker problems in the past and have never submitted a LTTE as a result, I'd be happy to write them if I could set up a nom de plume.
