I need help with a letter to the editor please. |
|
I have written a response to an editorial in my local newspaper the "urinal courier". Jacksonville, Illinois for those who care. Anyway could a few of you english majors or grammar nazis give it a look see and give me some input. Thanks for any help!!!!!!!
To the editorial staff, Your August 22 analysis of Madeleine Albright's thesis is what is flawed. Your assertion that the United states has practiced a "wallflower aggressiveness" and "refrained from boldly interventionist tactics" is false. If I may I will refresh your memory. In 1953 the US and British conspired to overthrow the democratically elected government of Iran. Did you forget about Viet Nam? The US has also meddled in the internal politics of many other nations. Nicaragua, El Salvador, and Honduras are just a few more of the countries. We have supported dictatorships in the name of "national security". The Shah of Iran, General Pinochet, and even Saddam Hussein have been beneficiaries of US backing. All three of these leaders tortured and brutalized there own populations with sanction and support from the US. This fact goes a long way in answering the question “why do they hate us?”. The editorial also asks the question if "European recalcitrance may have more to do with European arrogance that American arrogance"? I would submit Mr. Bush's cowboy "my way or the highway" attitude assured that, with the exception of Britain, our only allies were those that could be bought politically or bribed. It was a coalition of the BILLING. The editorial finally gets one fact right but still misses the point. It is now impossible for Saddam Hussein to hand a nuclear bomb to terrorist. The fact that the possibility of that happening while Saddam was in power was at best not at all likely. He didn’t have a nuclear bomb to hand out unless you still believe the cherry picked intelligence reports put forth by the Bush administration. In fact, now any WMD’s that might have still been in Iraq are not accounted for and could be in the hands of just about anyone including the terrorist that are now infiltrating Iraq for the sole purpose of killing American soldiers. In the mean time Afganistan is slipping back into the lawlessness that created a safe place for Al Queda in the first place. Are we safer now than before the “preemptive” attack on Iraq? I have not seen much that we are. We are now less respected and feared more. We speak of democracy and human rights for all but throw these principles away when they don’t seem to suit us for the moment. The rest of world see this contradiction between our words and actions, actions that only serve those that would brainwash all to hate us.
Sincerly, Brian Leanard Woodson

1. "there" should be "their" in the following sentence. |
|
"All three of these leaders tortured and brutalized there own populations with sanction and support from the US."
I didn't notice anything else. Good job.

Great letter...but did you do a word count? Check to see if your paper has a word limit. There are a couple of sentences that could go without losing the thread. :bounce:
