DOES ANYONE ELSE THINK WE SHOULD ACCELERATE THE PACE OF ACTIONS?
I think there should, even at this early stage of the organizing effort, be at least TWO ACTIONS PER WEEK, in a regular and reasonably predictable cycle. Evaluation of one action can overlap pursuit of another. If you go to slow, people lose interest. If you have two actions a week, then people are likely to see their favorite issue acted upon, and be more encouraged by that.

* Bolton Recess appointment
* Absolute Poverty Issue, especially with UN issue coming up
* Support UFW on Gallo
* Something in response to CAFTA
* Something in response to Darfur
* Something relevant to Hiroshima Day --

ALL THESE AND MORE COULD BE DONE IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST ......

1. Absolutely!!
When I signed up I assumed we would kinda hit the ground running as a group. I know I can, and I do, participate in various activities on my own but it just seems so much better when you know there are so many others doing the same thing at the same time. More impact, I suppose!

2. Something in response to the Abu Ghraib photos?
The growing reports of widespread abuse of Al-Quaida suspects is tarring the U.S. reputation for humanity in the eyes of the world.

Most Americans need to see something before they are inclined to be incensed about it. Clamoring for the release of the Abu Ghraib photos and an end to U.S. torture and inhumane treatment of prisoners and suspected Al-Quaida sympathizers really ought to be on any activist agenda.

4. The U.S. reputation for humanity? Surely, you jest!
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 12:27 AM by Sapphire Blue
A reputation for imperialism, arrogance, cruelty, greed... yes. Humanity? The United States? of America? A reputation for humanity in the eyes of the world? What world?

I'd say the following article pretty well summarizes the majority of the world's opinion of America... America, "The Home Of The Knave and the Land Of The Freak"...

5 November 2004

GOD HELP AMERICA
THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN..

THEY say that in life you get what you deserve. Well, today America has deservedly got a lawless cowboy to lead them further into carnage and isolation and the unreserved contempt of most of the rest of the world.

This once-great country has pulled up its drawbridge for another four years and stuck a finger up to the billions of us forced to share the same air. And in doing so, it has shown itself to be a fearful, backward-looking and very small nation.

This should have been the day when Americans finally answered their critics by raising their eyes from their own sidewalks and looking outward towards the rest of humanity.

And for a few hours early yesterday, when the exit polls predicted a John Kerry victory, it seemed they had.

But then the horrible, inevitable truth hit home. They had somehow managed to re-elect the most devious, blinkered and reckless leader ever put before them. The Yellow Rogue of Texas.

edited to add: this entire article is well worth reading.

I agree that we need to do something about the rendering, torture, and abuse being perpetrated by the long arms of the 'Commander-in-Chief'... we need to speak out & condemn this Administration's imperialism, arrogance, cruelty, greed... and this Administration's war crimes... we need to demand impeachment & trial for war crimes. Nothing less will suffice.

10. Most Definitely
I need something to keep me busy in between my time bashing Republicans in person. We should have an action a week and maybe someway for people to suggest different types of actions! I live in Ohio and I am always on the lookout for ways to spread Democratic ideals. However, I am really dissapointed Taft (or Bob Taxed) can't run again cuz we would crush him.

11. YES PLEASE
I can't believe we didn't do something about CAFTA before the house voted.

I am frankly kind of disappointed at the pace. I know the LTTE action was very successful, but we need to keep plugging away. There should be a LTTE assignment every week AFAIC, along with other stuff.

15. Yes.
One action a week, maybe two. I thought that was what we were going to do?

I found the Rove/Plame LTTE very informative. It was an issue I knew only a little about & it was educational to read everyone's letters.

16. New Directions
Why not put it all in one basket & work with local DC community & national organisations to SHUT DOWN DC IN A GENERAL STRIKE for at least two days?

We've had ordinary demos & such for decades. We voted for the corporate parties. What did we get? Nixon, Reagan, & two Bushes. Things are getting worse, not better. IMO we need to totally revamp our strategy & root out our errors. If America is becoming a neofascist state it's not just because of the successes of the neofascists, but because of the failures of progs.

17. Well, now that we have a LOT of people supporting the idea ...
How do we mobilize to get the Administrators to respond? Does anyone want to draw up a petition for people to sign and present? I am not good with those computer mechanix, not being of the computer generation or skills myself, LOL.
