Protect the message of protest in SF on the 28th
The Iraq war is unlawful and irrational, but those who speak out against it should be the reverse. Take heed on the weekend of September 25th that you do not act in a manner that will work against you and our cause more than to help it.

I watched from a distance the war protests of San Francisco this year and sighed as all respectability drained out of the effort because of the actions of an intemperate few. As I rode BART home and saw protesters blocking off the freeway, people around me called them assholes. The minds of those BART riders and every person on that freeway were turned against that action. How did that help?

The violent days of earning the right to protest without hindrance are gone, use today wisely or we will lose that right again. Peaceful and meaningful protest works more effectively to gain the support of those who wield power and make decisions.

I too have participated in protests. Holding candle light vigils to mourn the dead and lining the sidewalks with people holding signs, we gained the respect of the undecided giving us a chance to educate them and steer their energy to the support of our cause. The articles published in newspapers about our actions were those relating our solidarity and the cause for which we fought, instead of the cost of damage done like the articles published about the protests of this year.

A protest that you can truly be proud of is one where “Joe Suit” feels right taking a flier and participating in the protest on October 25. Nothing short of that is worth your time. Keep the police at bay by policing your own. Don’t destroy property for which the cost to fix it will take money away from our shrinking education budget. Be firm in your belief and rational in your behavior and you will win both the minds of Americans and the favor of both houses.

Good luck in September. If all goes well, I may join you in October. Most importantly stay safe in your endeavors. May Allah protect the people of Iraq and those who are unwilling occupants of their country.

1. Welcome to DU, jcc!
Very nicely put and very true as well.

I live in Vegas so I won't be able to attend the protest but you're right in the fact that we want to draw attention to ourselves WITHOUT pissing everyone off needlessly.

Good luck to all those of you who do attend. I hope there's lots of POSITIVE media coverage this time around.
