What: The U.S. Census Bureau will hold a news conference to release two reports: Income, Poverty, and Health Insurance Coverage in the United States: 2004, containing findings from the Current Population Survey (CPS); and Income, Earnings, and Poverty Data from the 2004 American Community Survey (ACS). The CPS findings are for the nation and states, while the ACS findings pertain to states, as well as counties and cities of 250,000 or more people. The ACS report also includes a comparison of earnings for men and women by selected characteristics, including industry and occupation.

When: Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. EDT

Who:

-- Hermann Habermann, deputy director, U.S. Census Bureau - brief remarks.

-- Charles Nelson, assistant division chief for Income, Poverty and Health Statistics, Housing and Household Economic Statistics Division, U.S. Census Bureau - CPS findings.

-- Preston Jay Waite, associate director for Decennial Census, U.S. Census Bureau - ACS findings.

Online News Conference Page: The CPS and ACS data tables, reports, and news release will be posted on the Census Bureau's online news conference page after 10 a.m. EDT on Aug. 30.

Closer to the event, you can access the page by clicking on the income, poverty and health insurance icon in the top left corner of the Census Bureau's home page at http://www.census.gov.

Webcast: There will be a live webcast of the news conference, accessible via the Census Bureau's online news conference page. Windows Media Player or RealPlayer software (both versions are free downloads) is required to view the webcast. A test signal will be available beginning at 9:15 a.m. EDT on Aug. 30 to verify your computer is correctly set up to view the webcast. Only media attending the event will be able to ask questions of the speakers.

Audio: Media may dial in to a telephone "listen line" to hear the news conference live. The dial-in phone number is 1-888-882- NEWS (6397); no password is needed. The listen line may be accessed beginning at 9:45 a.m. EDT.

Satellite Video: A live video broadcast of the news conference also will be available via satellite.

Live broadcast date: Aug. 30.

Live broadcast time: 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. EDT (sharp/firm out). (A test satellite signal will be available from 9:15 a.m. to 10 a.m. EDT).

Radio Feeds: Audio is available via the news conference webcast or the telephone listen line.

Transportation: The Census Bureau will provide bus transportation for the media from downtown Washington to the Suitland Federal Center. The bus will depart from the National Press Club at 14th and F Streets at 9 a.m. on the day of the news conference; it will leave the Census Bureau for the return trip between 11:30 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. EDT. To reserve a space on the bus, contact the Public Information Office on 301-763-3691.

Security: Photo identification is required for admission to the Census Bureau. Foreign nationals must contact the Census Bureau's Public Information Office to obtain a special security clearance form. Please allow at least 30 minutes for security check-in, longer for broadcast media with equipment. Given the time required for check-in, all media planning to attend should notify the Public Information Office at 301- 763-3691 by 10 a.m. EDT, Friday, Aug. 26.

1. Perhaps you could elucidate?
What makes this an effective press release, and how is it different from ineffective press releases? How does it succeed where others fail?

As a civilian who occasionally writes releases for local events of my committee. It has it all, format, contact information, digest, how to link to sattelite feeds, transportation.

I never said others fail, just that it seems very complete to me.

4. Exposure
How about going to where the local weatherman /woman broadcast from and holding a small protest signs etc... Almost every local weather person broadcasts from outside every nice day and you often see people in the background doing cute/funny things. Lets do so serious things instead. Would this be effective?
