Since yesterday, 35,000 Californians (and over 110,000 folks nationwide) have signed our "Recall No, Democracy Yes" pledge. The pledge has received national press coverage and is increasing momentum against the recall.

If we can get 100,000 Californians to pledge to vote No by this time next week, we'll demonstrate the strength of opposition to the recall. Help us reach that goal and it will be an amazing start to this five-week campaign.

The recall is an attempt to undo a fair election only months after it took place. It is part of a disturbing trend that began with the impeachment of President Clinton. Extremists who cannot win at the ballot box are going to any lengths to undermine the will of the voters.

Our democracy has survived 227 years for one simple reason: when confronted by extremism, Americans have always united in defense of freedom. We've got to defeat the recall to bring an end to this new, anti-democratic extremism. And we've got to defeat it decisively.

The recall was brought to us by a lone congressman who spent $1.7 million to gather the relatively small number of signatures required to initiate a recall. Now, a Hollywood actor is spending millions of his own money in an attempt to buy one of the country's highest offices. This is crazy and it needs to be defeated decisively to prevent more attacks on our democratic system like this one from happening.

Again, please ask your friends and family to sign the pledge. Remember Florida: a few votes can make all the difference in the world. People who sign the pledge will be more likely to vote no on election day. The pledge has already made an impact, but we need to go farther.

Davis, a Democrat, faces the prospect of becoming the first U.S. governor to be recalled since North Dakota ousted Lynn Frazier in 1921. Davis, 60, is alone on the first part of the Oct. 7 ballot, a yes-or-no on whether he should be fired. The second part is a dizzying list of 135 contenders to fill out his term if he fails to win a majority.

Pollsters are uncertain who will turn out to vote. Recent statewide poll results have varied widely. Davis received encouragement last week from a Los Angeles Times poll showing 50% favoring recall and 45% backing him, an uptick from earlier polls.

'I haven't absolutely ruled out the possibility that he could beat this (recall),' says John Feliz, campaign director for state Sen. Tom McClintock, the most conservative Republican running."

2. Exactly how...

will signing this petition affect the recall?

There is no provision in the California constitution to cancel a recall based on signatures. The recall will occur even if 100,000,000 signed the petition.

Hey, I'm as opposed to recall as anybody, but I've just never understood these internet petitions. What will this one do besides generate a mailing list for MoveOn.org?
