Jim Hightower, at the White Dog Cafe--UPENN Campus 9/19
Edited on Tue Sep-16-03 02:14 PM by Monica_L
Presenting an American Original, Jim Hightower, at the White Dog Cafe
and U of Penn Campus -
Reserve Now, for September 19!

On September 19, from 3-5 PM at Philadelphia's White Dog Cafe, on the
Penn University campus, we are in for a real treat -- a wine and fine
foods reception, with Jim Hightower. If you haven't heard Jim speak,
or met him, he is one of the funniest and best-informed people in
America today. His book, Thieves in High Places - They've Stolen Our
Country and It's Time To Take It Back!, is now on the nonfiction
bestseller list. Hightower is a genuine Texas populist, just the
antidote to "you-know-who."

Jim will appear at a fundraiser for a people's action alliance in
Philadelphia, led by Business Leaders for Sensible Priorities, at the
White Dog Cafe, 3420 Sansom Street, 3:00 PM on Friday. Wine, fresh
beverages, and hors d'eouvres will be served. Judy Wicks, Business
Leader Co-Chair, will personally welcome us to the event, and we will
discuss with Jim his ideas, and his book, which will be for sale at
the Black Cat Bookstore next door. In addition, we will hear from Jeff
Westphal, on "Co-Action," a budding alliance of peace and justice
people, about what we can do to help fulfill our shared vision for
this country, for world peace and global security. Jeff is a member of
our advisory board, and leading businessman, CEO of a company listed
as the one with the "highest job satisfaction in Pennsylvania," for
its participatory workplace policies, so Jeff "walks the talk."

The cost is $35, for a good time and a good cause. Contribute to the
fall program, if you are able, as well -- call Ed at 215-247-3066,
Vivian at 610-279-4290, to reserve via one easy phone call.

Now, if that's a little rich for your blood, we also have this Penn
Campus event lined up that day:

Special Free Public Event -- Penn Campus -- 5:30, Penn law building.

First, at 5 PM, you can come meet Jim Hightower at the Black Cat
Bookstore, 3424 Sansom, where you can get the book at a 10% discount.
At 5:30, we will cross the street and hear him speak at a free,
donation-only student community event, at Penn law, 3411 Sansom
Street, 5:30-7:00 PM. (give what you can -- we're encouraging $10
donations)

1. Give 'em hell Jim - the repukes and fatcats that is
Jim is the best. He's truly a patriot. Doing what he can to support democracy and expose corruption. He's Texas grown but he's one of the good guys. He is extremely entertaining. He helped out with an event in Austin too where the South Austin residents are fighting the Wal-mart super store virus infecting the country. There is nothing good to say about the business practices of Wal-mart.

Good luck with your events at White Dog Cafe and U of Penn Campus. I remember reading a nice little story about the White Dog Cafe on the net recently. I think it may have been in the NY Times. Anyway it mentioned how the owner made a thriving little business out of social activism. It sounded like a great little cafe.
I couldn't find the link to the article I read but I found this one which had some nice stuff in it too

Conde Nast Traveler named the White Dog one of 50 American restaurants "worth the journey." Says Wicks, whose own journey has proved rewarding in many ways: "I totally believe that you can do well and do good at the same time."
