Nationwide Meetup Idea: END THE STUPOR TUESDAY!
I got this in an e-mail, probably because I am on the Dean2004 Meet-Up list. I think it is a great idea and shouldn't be limited to Dean supporters. Pick your favorite candidate or just advocate ABB. The sender says, "Spread the Word" and I can't think of a better way than appealing to DU'ers. I removed the sender's last name and phone number, but left his e-mail address.

Whatcha think?

------------------------------------------------------------------

Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury has been having fun with the flash mob, Dean, Kasey and Sharpton over the past few days. So it dawned on me when I've been reading and hearing that two-thirds of us democrats still can't name one of the nine candidates running for president. We democrats for Dean can change this statistic by staging our own style flash mob event, a flash mob event that happens across the whole country. Here're how:

IDEA: HOUR LONG FLASH MOB for DEAN -- called -- END THE STUPOR TUESDAY

WHEN: Tuesday, November 4, 2003 --> EXACTLY one year before the general election

TIME: Between 5 PM and 6 PM

WHERE: Your favorite busy intersection - anywhere USA

WHAT: Hold up Howard Dean Rally signs, smile and wave at motorists as though the election were being held on November 4, 2003 - the wrong day - exactly one year ahead of schedule. Have roadway and intersections rallies all over the place. Spread out Meetup members throughout all the prominent drive-time intersections throughout the cities, towns and villages in the country - wherever Dean Meetups are organized.

Concept: Everyone's local media (TV broadcasters, Radio stations and newspapers) will be sent press releases to cover the END THE STUPOR - TUESDAY event.

Your press interaction should reveal feelings like this:

We democrats need to be informed and aware of whom it is that is running for president. Knowing that two-thirds of the polled democrats still can't name even one of the nine candidates running for president is unacceptable. While we believe that any of the nine candidates would be leaps and bounds better than Bush, we believe that Howard Dean is the best of the group. That's why we Democrats for Dean are not waiting for all the confusion and all of the hype that blots out people's attention a couple of months before the election. We want democrats to know that we are lucky to have Howard Dean running for president, that the doctor has the right prescription for America, and that he should be the first one on their list of candidates. Polled democrats won't be 0 for 9 again. We can't let democrats be uninformed: our future is too important. Bush is leading us in the wrong direction and we want our country back.

Your actual press release may read something like this:

On Tuesday, November 4, 2003, Howard Dean supporters will be participating in an hour-long event called “End the Stupor Tuesday”. From 5:00 to 6:00 PM, Dean supporters will be visible at major traffic intersections across the country to raise the awareness of the public about Dean’s campaign for the Democratic Presidential Nomination and the importance of the upcoming national election. The event is being held exactly one year before the national election and is named “End the Stupor Tuesday” instead of Super Tuesday to encourage voters to “end the stupor” and become politically active. Recent polls have demonstrated that the majority of registered Democrats have no awareness of the slate of candidates running for President.

Additional Notes: Make sure to spread out throughout your community’s streets. However, choose one of the locations where the press is invited to see a big Dean crowd. Have a volunteer spokesperson ready to talk to the press. Additionally, encourage Meetup members to have Dean Rally signs pre-ordered for the event (available at the Dean Mart http://demstore.com/cgi-local/SoftCart.exe/scstore/Dean/?E+scstore ). Having handmade signs are good too (signs with all types of messages covering candidate awareness, taking our country back and comments on the current regime).

1. Is it me ...
or is the concept of "planning" a flash mob missing the point.

I saw a list of dumb quotes from newspapers a couple year back and they had one from Singapore: "Have spontaneous fun: And here's how!"

This is what "flash mobs" seem to be saying.

2. Ok - then call it something else
What about November 4 as a sort of Democrat awareness day.
