Boycott: If George Bush is Re-elected . . . .
This morning after meditation, I understood that if George Bush is re-elected, the next step in my personal development will be a boycott of cable TV.

I hold media, especially TV, responsible for the war in Iraq. Bush and Congress could not have done what they did without their mouthpiece. I hold the media responsible for electing Bush & Co. and for all of the damage this man has done to the rest of us. I hold TV in particular responsible for propagating superficial, simple-minded, self-righteous, onanistic, stupid, dishonest, prejudiced, fascist, anti-environment, xenophobic, sycophantic, petty, cowardly, anti-intellectual, selfish, hate-filled, anti-labor, disgusting, ugly trash.

I hereby swear that if * is re-elected my days as a "media child" are over, and I will cancel my cable TV the next day.

I will share a plan for communicating the purpose of this act with the community groups I work with and with anyone else I come into contact with, and I am asking those of you who haven't already boycotted cable TV to do the same.

1. We gave up our cable tv over a year ago
part of it was to cut expenses the other part was "sick of it" we could have made it a necessary expense but chose not to. I told our cable company exactly what we thought before we handed our equipment and the final bill in.

It makes it kind of tough only having 4 channels to chose from but hey, I don't have to subject myself to the likes of Paula Zahn!

3. Sick of it is right!
I've been feeling more "sick" lately than I've felt in my entire life, and every time I happen to look at that darn thing I see something ugly (with the exception of To Kill a Mockingbird, which I've watched 4 times this year, and I could get that on DVD).

It would be so great to have at least hundreds of people "pull the plug" the day after the election if * wins.

I get better information on the internet anyway, and usually weeks before it turns up on TV.

7. I've never bothered with cable.
My financial choice has always been cable vs. internet, and internet has always won, hands down.

The only things I watched on cable when I visited my folks were the interior desecration shows (hilarious) and old movies. Big woop.

I keep my TV around for PBS and rented movies. Otherwise, you can find me right here, hammering away at my keyboard, and surfing all over the world.

2. kill your tv
it rots your mind anyway. you can get any and all the news you want or need right here on the good old internet. and it will actually contain the truth. read a book. listen to npr. better yet, continue the meditation.

5. My husband would shrivel and die if we got rid of the zombie box.
At least after Judge Judy he now automatically changes the channel to ABC so we aren't infected with Faux News. Recently he said "You're right, I was wrong, the country is in a huge mess mess and I can't get the fundamentalists at work to see that." It only took 3 years for him to see the light!

And Disney channel is a life saver. I recently figured out the remote and blocked all Fox channels today. Best I can do for now. When I lived alone I had no TV and didn't miss it at all.

6. if shrub is elected in 2004
I won't even be in this country anymore. All you'll see of me is a dust trail pointing to the Canadian border.

9. I've been thinking the same way, alot, recently...EXCEPT
For quite some time now I have been really angry with myself...why didn't I get out in streets and RIOT when the supreme court did not allow the vote to be COUNTED??? How did I EVER allow myself to be so "sophisticated" as to just "take it in stride"? When did I start thinking our democracy was like a sports team, "We'll get 'em next time?"

I believe that the large media outlets (radio included) have really damaged our democracy. The FCC, under Michael Powell has contributed greatly too.

I've been thinking that one of the things that really upsets corporate America is a public outcry/boycott -- it certainly worked with CBS and the Reagan movie! Corporate America is really very fickle.

I also am thinking that we need to support each other more (financially). Kucinich is my choice for President; he stands almost no chance at the Democratic convention and, in the interest of defeating bush (if we are really still having elections), I certainly plan to do everything I can for the after the convention for **ANYONE** However, we need to FINANCIALLY encourage people to run this race on our behalf.

I am not a "trust fund baby" ;( so...I've been "thinking"

What if, NOW, we turn off the cable/satellite subscriptions? what if we THEN use that "saved" money to support those candidates with $10 a MONTH that really need our financial "encouragement"? What if we were to send ANOTHER $10 a MONTH to a striking union or other ACTIVIST organization? Then, what if we sent $10 a month to a FOOD BANK or CHARITY? That would mean, for me, a SAVINGS of $20 a MONTH ($240 the YEAR) and a $120 political contribution, a $120 ACTIVIST contribution AND a $120 charitable contribution!

I would NOT be watching re-runs on the subscription TV; I would not be subjecting myself to more "brainwashing"; I would not be supporting multi-national corporate advertisers; I WOULD be SUPPORTING, for me, IN A BIG WAY, my political candidate; I WOULD be writing to my "news" channels that I was cancelling them as they have a problem with presenting "fact" based news, and are "yellow journalists" at their worst; I WOULD be writing letters to my favorite subscription "regular" shows and explaining to them that since I PAY to watch them, I expect MORE from them than constant RE-RUNS; I WOULD be writing to the ADVERTISERS and telling them I cancelled because they insist on supporting "propoganda" as opposed to "news", that I expect them to "vote with their dollar" for DEMOCRACY and not their own political agenda; I WOULD be writing to my congressmen that I am cancelling in the interest of democracy. SECOND MOST importantly, I would have TIME ... to devote to PEOPLE ... to connect ...

If just hard core DEMOCRATS were to cancel their subscription TV and send the savings on, I think we could actually DO something. Certainly we could ENERGIZE our political candidates!

10. boycott everything!!
buy only the bare minimums. food, shelter, medicine and clothes when needed.

boycott his big corporate backers. quit smoking. give up your car. use public transport, your bike, car pool. buy some good american-made gym shoes and walk everywhere.

when you do spend money make sure you know exactly to whom it is going (your neighbourhood bookstore, local farmers market/co-op).

donate to your favourite liberal causes in the asshole's name.
