FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Central Oyster Bay Democratic Club will hold a Democratic Presidential Forum at the Club’s next meeting, November 12, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Ellsworth W. Allen Town Park on Motor Avenue in Farmingdale. Representatives of all the candidates for the 2004 Democratic nomination for President have been invited to attend the Forum and seek support for their candidates in the New York Democratic Primary which will be held on March 2, 2004.

Representatives from the following candidates are expected to attend: former Vermont Governor Howard Dean, retired General Wesley Clark, North Carolina Senator John Edwards, Massachusetts Senator John Kerry, Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman, Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich, former House Minority Leader Dick Gephardt, the Rev. Al Sharpton, and former Illinois Senator Carol Moseley Braun.

New York State’s pledged delegates to the 2004 Democratic National Convention will be apportioned on the basis of the number of votes cast for each candidate for the presidential nomination in each Congressional District. In order to get on the New York Democratic Primary ballot, a candidate for president must obtain 5,000 signatures of Democrats throughout the state on a petition. A Democrat within a Congressional District who wants to become a delegate pledged to a presidential candidate must obtain 1,000 Democratic signatures within the Congressional District on a petition. The starting date for gathering signatures on petitions is November 26, 2003. The petitions must be filed by January 2, 2004. The New York Presidential Primary will be held on March 2, 2004 to select pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention which will open in Boston on July 26, 2004.

By holding a Democratic Presidential Forum, the Central Oyster Bay Democratic Club hopes to stimulate interest in participation in the New York Democratic Presidential Primary which will be held, for the first time in the history of the Democratic Party, on the same day as the Democratic primaries in California, Connecticut, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, Ohio, Rhode Island, Texas and Vermont. On the same day, there will also be delegate-selection caucuses in Hawaii and Minnesota.

Interested people from Farmingdale, North Massapequa, Plainedge, Bethpage, Old Bethpage, Plainview and Farmingdale State Univsersity are invited to attend. For more information call 516-501-0106 or 516-694-1209.
