Take back AARP!!
Edited on Thu Nov-20-03 09:50 AM by meg
If we quit AARP, the GOP wins by neutralizing the senior lobby. Our only alternative is to take AARP back!

Send email to each of the board members http://www.aarp.org/leadership-board/">link asking them to tell you how to remove the CEO, President and board members.

Put the name of the board member in the subject line.

member@aarp.org Contact: Bill Novelli

member@aarp.org Contact: Christine Donohoo

member@aarp.org Contact: Charles Mendoza

member@aarp.org Contact: Betty J. Severyn

member@aarp.org Contact: Marie Smith

1. I was thinking along the same lines....
Did you see this article this morning? http://www.msnbc.com/news/995794.asp?0si=-

It talks about the 'wining and dining' of Bill Novelli, who is the CEO of AARP, by Gingrich and Hastert. Time for another recall!!

4. I Disagree
Its time for a senior lobby that is not just a front for selling insurance and etc. I cancelled my AARP membership when I learned they supported what I call the Medicare Destruction Bill. I am encouraging seniors in my area to drop AARP, discouraging anyone from joining AARP, and working to try to evict the AARP from the small rent free office that they have in our city funded senior center.

AARP officials would like seniors to take the soft approach. Protests alone will not matter to them. The money is what will get their attention.

Its not just their support of the Medicare bill that is so offensive. Their new strategy to cater to the younger people also needs careful attention. There was a recent story about that -- about their intention to include people in their 40s. That is just an obvious move toward trying to increase their profit making business.

I think its long past time to drop out of AARP, especially by lower income seniors. For as long as I have paid attention to AARP, they mostly look after the interests of higher income seniors.

It was nice to post the e-mail addresses of the board members. I'm all for contacting them. But my contacts will say that I have jumped ship and don't plan to return.

It's too late for me to turn the tide of the AARP now. They have become a shill for the insurance companies and there are many viable alternatives out there which share my views.

I've joined the Older Women's League http://www.owl-national.org/about/index.html

Another group is Wired Seniors: http://www.wiredseniors.com/

Or the Alliance for Retired Americans: http://www.retiredamericans.org/about.htm

Edited to add: Welcome to DU! :hi:
