Kucinich: $3.34 Million in Matching Funds
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 1, 2004

Tomorrow the Dennis Kucinich for President campaign will file with the FEC for $2.603 million in matching funds. This is in addition to $741,000 already filed for, making a total of $3.34 million. That total includes no contributions since December 4 -- so there is more to come. The rapidly expanding Kucinich campaign receives a higher percentage of its contributions in small donations than does any other campaign, and processing the many small contributions takes time.

Congressman Kucinich himself helped answer the phones until 3 a.m. this morning Eastern Time (the end of the fourth quarter Pacific Time) as contributions came in. The campaign's fourth quarter money now stands at $1.622 million, with many checks still to be counted and the possibility that the figure will reach the mark set by the campaign during the third quarter of $1.7 million. The Kucinich campaign brought in just over $1.5 million in the second quarter, and $187,000 in the first quarter. So the total, without counting matching funds, is about $5 million. With at least 80 percent being matched, that total jumps to about $9 million.

January 2 and 3rd will witness a series of fundraising events for the Kucinich campaign in Austin, Texas, including a concert on the 3rd featuring Willie Nelson performing his new song "What Ever Happened to Peace on Earth." Like last night's fundraising party at campaign headquarters, the concert will be shown in live video over the web at www.kucinich.us

Happy New Year!

6. Dennis has plenty supporters -- but we're generally poor

That's a significant difference.

DK is the USA's Lula.

(edit: wouldn't it be nice to have an election rather than an auction?)

9. We should have an election and not an auction
You're right.

It shouldn't matter how big your "cache" is, it should matter what you can do as President.

10. So money isn't everything...
until your candidate starts to raise money.

I see how it is.

11. money isn't everything...
a good campaign...and that is what Dennis has, is 99% solid on the issues and 1% money to have the resources to get the message of those issues out.

I bring to light to those out there on this forum who say Dennis has no money(which he obviously does)...and that he is unelectable because he can't raise any money(which he has).

Funny how you put words in my mouth.

12. I'm not saying this is bad...
I'm just saying that lot's of DK supporters (I'm not saying it's you) don't seem to think much of money when it belongs to Dean or Kerry, but as soon as DK gets some it's like the second coming of Christ.

13. I think you're missing the point
Money shouldn't be the measure of how 'electable' a candidate is--unless it's really an auction, in which case Smirk has already won. So we dismiss all the claims from Dean supporters that his millions mean he's the best choice. If it's all about money, then Bush is the best choice and we all know how much a total crock of foecal material that is.

But money is necessary. It's not and shouldn't be SUFFICIENT, but some of it is necessary if only for plane fare and to pay the phone bill--we're not fools. If the run-up to the election were 2 or 3 years, we'd have the time to shake out a complete grassroots organisation and plane fare and phone bills would be all it takes. But we don't. Kucinich only agreed to stand for election in February, 10.5 months ago, and the election is in another 10.5. So we're glad to have money.

There's nothing hypocritical about it at all.

While obviously less than Dean, it's a lot of money for a "fringe" candidate; NYT has now started calling DK a "boutique" candidate rather than a "fringe" candidate. But not Adam Nagourney; he still avoids referring to DK at all.

He called Dennis a "vanity candidate" during the debates, sounds like the same type of putdown to me.

18. good question
Edited on Mon Jan-05-04 07:44 PM by goodhue
That's what the most recent NYT profile from late last week called DK, "boutique". I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. I guess a boutique candidate is a fringe candidate with money.

Here is link to story . . .

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/02/politics/campaigns/02KUCI.html

and relevant graph . . .

As he hopscotches around the country, delivering speeches that blend the themes of John Lennon with an ardent defense of the working class, Mr. Kucinich — a slim man at 5-foot-7, 135 pounds — has become the boutique candidate for peace activists and Hollywood liberals. Willie Nelson and Bonnie Raitt are the headliners of a fund-raiser concert for him this week. Ed Asner, the actor, likens Mr. Kucinich to "a prophet speaking the truth."

I guess boutique candidates like to hopscotch, I really dunno.

19. Possibly
it is nicer than vanity candidate. To me shopping in a boutique usually means (or meant, I have not seen one in a while) shopping for something special or unique. Since I am a resident of the "boonies" that may just be my interpretation but to me it would be a good thing.

Because even though DK has more money than Dean now (and NO debt), we could still use the contributions.
