Howard Dean taken to task on war stance
By Jesse J. DeConto
Portsmouth, NH Sunday, January 11, 2004

PORTSMOUTH - Supporters of Rep. Dennis
Kucinich’s campaign for president are
challenging Howard Dean’s claim that only he
"opposed the war from the start," but the Dean
campaign dismisses Kucinich, along with former
Sen. Carol Moseley Braun and the Rev. Al
Sharpton, as minor candidates.

Dean is circulating pamphlets featuring the
bold-faced headline, "Only Dean opposed the war
from the start," prompting a flurry of e-mails from
the Kucinich camp to media outlets.

Dean spokesman Matthew Gardner concedes
that Kucinich, Braun and Sharpton have all
consistently opposed the war, but "Gov. Dean is
the only major candidate to have specifically
stood up to President Bush on Iraq."

Moseley Braun, who was in New Hampshire this past week, said Dean’s vocal
opposition to the war in Iraq has helped his campaign, but she called on the
front-runner’s staff to retract the pamphlet.
"I can’t imagine that Howard Dean would want to mislead voters deliberately,"
she said.
"It’s a misrepresentation," Kucinich said. "This does a disservice to the people of
New Hampshire by falsely representing his position, and he’s misrepresenting
my position, too."
