5. It's critical that we pick the right candidate, even if it's painful. |

This is the minor leagues. Our nominee better practice up for the majors. And get tough as nails.

6. Well... One good thing for sure... |

Rove can't just place his eggs in one basket. They're going to have to expend the energy to cover several candidates. (Anything that makes the other side waste money can't be bad)

First off, unlike Al Gore, I think a healthy, spirited campaign is a good thing. There's more than enough time after it ends to seal whatever splits were created - assuming those fissures aren't organic, and hence shouldn't be filled. Secondly, the idea that everyone should rally around the frontrunner in December is among the lamest ideas I've ever come across.
One of the key advantages of having a close, spirited primary fight is that every candidate still standing is vetted - and hence can be seen as relatively clean by the General Election. There's no unexpected baggage that will emerge later. Unfortunately, that may not be the case in 2004 - in light of the problems with the release of Dean's Gubernatorial Papers.
I'd say that a tight, contested primary will be a good thing for the Democratic Party. The Party needs to get beyond the spin of these candidates, and focus much more on their measure as a person and authentic leader.

a good thing, as Martha Stewart would say. ;) If it were a cakewalk and the nominee was obvious from the moment we started, we wouldn't know that we've chosen the best candidate. The primary is the time for the candidate to show strength, resiliency, and broad appeal..if we bypass the process, we end up with a weak candidate. With the race tightening, I'm confident that the winner will be the best candidate for the GE.

Will they express more on the issues or just attack? Either way, of course, the field will thin as we proceed.

11. If this is a reference to one candidate dropping out, |

I don't see that as doing much to tighten the race or narrow the field, particularly as CMB's candidacy has had little support. CMB has had a good bit of personal support -- many people appreciate her as an articulate advocate of Democratic (and democratic) principles -- but not many have identifed themselves as supporting Carol Mosley-Braun for president.
