MIAMI - U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek endorsed Alex Penelas for the U.S. Senate on Monday, calling the Miami-Dade County mayor a candidate who could reach out to the parents of school-age children and the state's growing Hispanic community.

Meek, a Miami Democrat who led the charge to place class size limits in the state constitution, said Penelas shared his allegiance to education issues and would attract "level-minded moderates" and Hispanics often key among an evenly divided electorate.

"Hispanics will have a strong option of someone who has stood strong on behalf of fairness and equity," Meek said.

Penelas said Meek "has been right on the issues throughout his public service career." The mayor also led an education initiative in 2002, pushing for universal pre-kindergarten for all 4-year-olds starting in 2005.

I agree with his endorsement. The GOP nominee is either going to be Mel Martinez (Rove's candidate), Bill McCollum (who lost to Bill Nelson), or Katherine Harris (who I think we should want to face, and Rove is nervous about).

Any of the 3, I think Mayor Penelas has a better shot of winning than the front-runner in most dem primary polls, Betty Castor . He may have done alot to present himself as a centrist mayor, but I believe him when he say's he would be a Bob Graham type senator
