When you are in the military, you are essentially apolitical. This is especially true for high ranking officers. It is similar to being in civilian law enforcement. When you are enforcing the law, you can not be distracted by wrestling with whether or not you agree with the law. To do the job well, you don’t think about it; you just do it. It is the same for those in the military. A good soldier obeys the chain of command and does not ponder the justification of the mission. When Wes Clark was an officer in the military, he towed the line. He obeyed orders and was a good soldier. It is ridiculous to imply that Clark is somehow less of a Democrat because he voted for Nixon or Reagan or if he supported the first Gulf War, or even if he did not criticize George Bush for choosing to go to war. That was then and this is now. Now that Wes is retired, we see a passionate visionary emerging. We see a great democratic leader in the same tradition as Jefferson or Kennedy emerging and growing into one of the great leaders of the 21st century.
I have seen many friends and relatives who were life-long Republicans, become passionate Democrats in the past two years. I guess we have George Bush to thank for that. He has awakened a sleeping giant. He has energized a new army of activist mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, grandfathers and grandmothers. Tupperware parties are now being replaced with campaign meet-ups and house parties. Wes Clark has all the passion of a new immigrant to the country of his/her dreams; all the passion of someone who has a spiritual awakening and changes religions. Clark is as much of a Democrat as any of us. Read his positions on the issues, on his web site and see for yourself.
http://www.forclark.com/And yet Wes Clark is still the best candidate to defeat George Bush. Why? Because he is not in the dubious position of having to attack George Bush for going to war, while defending a decision to support the war. Democrats who voted to give George Bush the power to go to war will have a difficult time criticizing George Bush for going to war.
Clark’s “fast track” program for creating jobs is beautiful in its simplicity. I call it a fast track program because I believe it can work very quickly. The plan is an incentive to hire Americans - to keep the jobs in America. Very briefly, companies will receive a $5,000 tax credit for each permanent full-time employee hired. This will not only create jobs quickly, but it will help struggling companies get back on their feet again. There are also incentives to upgrade and install new manufacturing equipment. This compliments the creation of new jobs. This program will be financed by taking back some of the tax breaks that George Bush gave to those making over $200,000 per year. http://clark04.com/speeches/002/ You say Clark is not very good at moderated debates? Who is? George Bush is not very good either. This is because moderated debates are not about informing voters. They are not about candidates; they are about the pundits. They are about reporters who are more concerned with furthering their own careers than informing the American voters. Fortunately Americans are smarter than that. We are too wise to be confused by self-promoting debate moderators. Americans will make their choices based on speeches and ultimately we will disregard all the negative press and make our OWN decision as to who we want to be the next president.
Ultimately, when voters go to the polls in November they will choose a candidate that they can respect; a candidate that is “presidential.” And what is, being “presidential?” It is being confident without being arrogant. It is being able to listen and connect to people. It is being a visionary who intends to build long-tern relationships with world leaders. It is being able to know who to trust and who to delegate which tasks to. It is about being a leader. We are truly blessed that we have all these qualities in one candidate who has offered his life to us so that he may serve our great country as he has done for most of his life. That candidate is General Wesley Clark.
