Are there any avowed atheists/agnostics in US politics?
Just asking.

It seems like every politician in America feels the need to trollop out their belief in the old invisible sky being. Are there any who are known to be non-believers? They don't necessarily need to get on a soapbox about it.

Names?

1. Well, here is a list of celebrity atheists
http://www.celebatheists.com/

Some of them are politicians, though not American...

I guess every country has to go through it's fundamentalist period on it's road to maturity.

2. HA!
The problem is most atheists/agnostics are too busy "destroying the moral fabric of America" to run for political office. Or at least that's what the fascist Bible-belters and Christian Coalition would say.

3. Sadly, the fascist Bible-belters and Christian Coalition
aren't required to kill the election chances of atheists/agnostics.

Any time there's a poll on the subject, the great majority of voters say they would never vote for someone who doesn't believe in God.

4. The one possibility that I know of
is Oregon Congressman Earl Blumenauer. When Congressional bios are given, he always states "no religious preference." That doesn't mean he's an atheist, but he's definitely secular.

Since Oregon has the lowest rate of religious affiliation in the country, this is apparently not a problem with his constituents.

This hasn't necessarily made Oregon an enlightened place, though. When religious people go bad, they turn to Bush Republicanism. When atheists go bad, they turn to libertarianism. Unfortunately, an awful lot of people in Oregon, both religious and secular, have been "turning bad" lately.

8. 3 democratic congressman list no religious affiliation
John Tierney of Massachusetts, Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin and Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii say they have no religious affiliation. This certainly doesn't mean their atheists or even agnostics but I guess they aren't part of any organized religion.

9. Jesse Ventura
Former MN Governor Jesse Ventura took alot of flak when he said on TV that "religion is a crutch for the weak-minded." I think that probably means he is athiest or agnostic but I'm not 100% sure (he could just be against organized religion)...
